  3. SPAIN’S “GOLDEN AGE” • Cortes conquers the Aztec empire and sends all the gold and riches to Spain • Pizarro conquers the Inca empire and sends gold and silver to Spain • Queen Isabella strengthens Spain’s army • Balboa sends gold and pearls to Spain

Martin Luther was a Catholic priest in Germany who was well known for protesting the policies of the Catholic Church. • In 1517 he started the Protestant Reformation – a movement to reform the Catholic Church. • The reformers became known as Protestants because they protested the Catholic Church’s practices.

  6. Felt Catholic church had too many rules and the pope had too much power. • Ideas of Reformation spread with help of the printing press. • This led to violent confrontations between Catholics and Protestants.

  8. The Six Wives of Henry VIII • King Henry VIII of England wanted a son to take over England when he died, or a male heir. • His first wife did not give him a son. He wanted to divorce her and get a new wife who could give him a son. • The Catholic Church did not allow divorces, so in 1534 King Henry VIII of England founded the Church of England, or the Anglican Church (Protestant Church).

Queen Elizabeth I • King Philip II of Spain led Catholic Reformation against the Protestant movement. • Queen Elizabeth I of England was a Protestant and took action against King Philip II. • She used sea dogs to raid Spanish ships bringing wealth home from Americas. • Sir Francis Drake was the most well known sea dog.

  12. Spanish Armada • King Philip II was angered by attacks and sent Spanish Armada. • Armada had large numbers but English ships had speed, mobility, and cannons. • July 1588 two fleets meet off English Channel

  15. Reasons for the Decline of Spanish Empire • Defeat of Spanish Armada showed Spain’s navy could be beaten. Weakened navy could no longer protect Spain’s empire in America’s. Led countries such as England, France, and the Netherlands to challenge Spanish power. • INFLATION: a rise in the amount of money in use and thus in the price of goods. (Spartan buck example; dirt example)

  19. Roanoke: The Lost Colony After the defeat of the Spanish Armada and the end of the Spanish Golden Age, England began to colonize the east coast of North America. Not all of their attempts were successful. • What are some possible reasons for why a European colony in North America might fail? (discuss with your groups)
