  1. SER SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATIONS WORKSHOP 2009SER 25th Committee

  2. What are the Schols? • Extra exams (starting 11th Jan. But could potentially be held in the week before the official start) • Amount of exams varies by course • Overall 1 is required (don’t need a 1 in everything) • Usually taken by SF but JS can do it (JS take the same exams as SF)

  3. General info. • Need to register by deadline (Mon. Nov 2nd) • No late registration or changing your subject choices after the date • Could have 4 exams in a row • Each exam 2.25 hours long • Grade count system used: Eg. 70 70 70 & 60 = Sch. OR 100, 68, 68 & 68 = Sch. OR 72, 72, 68, & 68 = Sch. • More info on weighted system in handbook or from the relevant department • A really good/bad result will stand out more

  4. What are the benefits? • Fees paid for (up to 5 years if post-grad. Studies pursued) • Free accommodation/money towards rent • Commons • Recognition (Sch. after your name)

  5. Who should do it? • People with good Leaving Cert./A-level results • Good results in JF exams

  6. Downside • No Christmas vacation • A lot of extra work • No exemptions

  7. Exams • BESS: 9 papers (5 in reality) – do any 4 • Papers: • Economics 1 • Economics 2 • Politics 1 • Politics 2 • Business 1 • Business 2 • Sociology 1 • Sociology 2 • QM (Quantitative methods)

  8. TSM • 3 papers – do any 2 • ESS • 5 papers – do any 4 • Economics • 3 papers – do any 2 • PESS • 7 papers – do 4 but you must do one paper for each subject

Economics • Paper 1: • 6 Qs – do 3 • Based on Intermediate Economics course • Only micro topics will be examined, however an understanding of 1st year Marco would be beneficial • There will be no questions based explicitly on first year material • Remember: not everyone in intermediate economics did Intro! • Paper will be set by Francis O Toole • Previous Schol papers the best guide to the types of questions that will come up but NOT the best guide to the format • Last year was the first year the full course in micro was complete for the Schol exams – keep this in mind when looking at past papers • The summer exams will have questions for these topics but try to think of “part (c)” type questions that could be asked

  10. Paper 2: • 8 Qs – do 3 • Based on Economy of Ireland and Public Policy courses • Paper set by John O Hagan (4 questions) and ?(4 questions)

  13. QM • There will be a choice • N questions, answer n-3 questions • There will be one Maths question based on 1st year material – not compulsory

  14. Sociology • 2 papers • Paper 1 • Based on JF and first half of SF material • 6Qs- answer 2Qs • Thematic questions (gender/migration/globalisation/ economic issues) • Paper 2 • Choose 2 books related to a topic covered in lectures (must be approved by the dept.) • Critical evaluation

  15. Tips to remember when sitting Schols • There is a lot of choice in the questions and papers so you can avoid your weak subjects and topics.
