  3. Automation and Electronic Health Record Use is EXPLODING…. • Practice (Acute care, Community care, Long-term care, Medical practices) • Education • Research • All settings globally

  4. Practice setting challenges & advances in information technology 2004: USA Federal mandate for Office of the National Coordinator & EHR adoption by 2014 2009: HITECH Act, Meaningful Use, Interoperability/data exchange, Standards, & Terminologies Drivers, Challenges, & Milestones

  5. 2011-12 Stage 1: Baseline for data capture and information sharing-meet 20 of 25 objectives; $4.5 billion 2013 Stage 2: Certification, involve patients, code sets, more objectives 2015 Stage 3: Will expand on Stage 2 with more objectives; penalties begin if not using EHRs Drivers, Challenges, & Milestones (cont.)
