  2. Compounds containing Multivalent Metals • Multivalent Metals: can form 2 or more different positive ions with different ion charges Ex.: Iron (Fe) has a charge of 3+ and 2+ • The charge that is listed 1st is the most common So how do you tell the difference between iron 2 and iron 3?

  3. Use Roman Numerals I-VII, which correspond to the ion charges +1 to +7 Examples: • Fe 3+  Fe (III)  said “iron three” • Pb 4+  Pb (IV)  said “lead four”

Steps: • Identify the metal and verify it forms more than one ion • Determine the ratio of ions • Note the charge on the negative ion • The positive and negative charges must balance • Write the name of the compound
