  1. February 8, 2013 • (A Day) • Agenda • DSJ #25 • Darwin’s Observations (Notes) • Video: The Jeff Corwin Experience – The Galapagos Islands • DSR #25

  2. February 11, 2013 • (B Day) • Agenda • DSJ #25 • Darwin’s Observations (Notes) • Video: The Jeff Corwin Experience – The Galapagos Islands • DSR #25

  3. DSJ #25 • Science Notebook – 49B • Prompt: In 5 sentences or more, describe how species of birds are different. Use examples of specific types of birds and describe their differences in things like habitat (where they live) and what they eat. Describe the ways in all birds are similar.

  4. Darwin’s observations

  5. Changes Over Time Learning Objective Students will describe the observations that Darwin made on his voyage to the Galapagos islands and describe the theory of evolution that he proposed soon after.

  6. Changes Over Time Darwin’s Voyage • In 1831, 22-year-old Charles Darwin sailed on the Beagle, from England to the Galápagos Islands to observe all of the different plants and animals there.

  7. Changes Over Time Darwin’s Voyage • 1. True or false? Charles Darwin was not surprised by the variety of living things he saw on his voyage around the world. False Darwin was amazed by the tremendous diversity of living things that he saw.

  8. Vocabulary • 2. A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring is called a ________________. Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidisnigra)

  9. Vocabulary • 2. A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring is called a __species________. Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidisnigra)

  10. Vocabulary • 3. A _______________ is the preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past.

  11. Vocabulary • 3. A ____fossil_____ is the preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past.

  12. Galapagos Organisms • 4.) a. b. c. d. • Darwin found many similarities between Galapagos organisms and those in South America. • The iguanas on the Galapagos islands had large claws that allowed them to grip slippery rocks, where they fed on seaweed. • Darwin hypothesized that a small number of different plant and animal species had come to the Galapagos islands from the mainland. • Tortoises on one island had dome-shaped shells. Those on another island had saddle-shaped shells.

  13. Darwin’s Observations • 5.) Darwin noticed many differences among similar organisms as he traveled from one Galapagos island to the next.

  14. Adaptations • 6.) _______ insects • 7.) _______ seeds a. b. Finches that ate seeds had strong, wide beaks. Finches that ate insects had narrow, needle-like beaks.

  15. Adaptations • 8.) A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce is an adaptation.

  16. Darwin’s Conclusions • 9.) a. b. c. d. • Darwin spent the next 20 years consulting with other scientists, gathering more information, and thinking through his ideas. • Darwin hypothesized that species gradually changed over many generations. • From the evidence he collected, Darwin concluded that organisms on the Galapagos islands had evolved. • Darwin studied other examples of changes in living things, such as selective breeding, to help him understand how evolution might occur.

  17. Evolution • 10.) What is evolution? • Evolution is the gradual change in a species over time.

  18. Scientific Theory • 11.) • A well-tested concept that explains many observations is: • a. idea • b. evolution • c. Scientific theory • d. hypothesis

  19. Glue in SNB **Please remember to use only TWO drops of glue!!** If everyone uses only TWO drops, a lot of glue is saved over time…. • 49A – Darwin’s Observations (Notes) • 50B – The Jeff Corwin Experience

  20. DSR #25 • Science Notebook – 49B (Under DSJ #25) • Prompt: In 3 sentences or more, write about the 3 most interesting things you learned from watching the video “The Jeff Corwin Experience: The Galapagos Islands.”
