  1. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Mildred Taylor

  2. Background • This novel is about life for an African-American family, the Logans, in Depression-era Mississippi. The Logans are fortunate; they own their own land in a time and place when many—black and white—are living as sharecroppers* on various plantations. However, they are also living in a time and place when racially-motivated crimes are common. *Sharecropper- a farmer who lives on the landlord’s land and gives a portion of crops as rent

  3. Cassie, the young narrator, and her siblings experience racism daily. One early example is described in the first chapter, when the reader learns about segregated* schools in the 1930s. What is segregation?

  4. Observations • On the next two slides, you will see two photographs of Southern schools. These photographs show the type of school the Logan children attended. • What are two observations you can make about the school based on the photographs?

  5. Close reading of passage • Turn to page ? of the novel and read the passage about Great Faith Elementary and Secondary School and the Jefferson Davis County school. • What are three differences between the two schools?
