  1. AB-LTC Technical Review Extraction Protection Elements, TCDS, TCDQ. Wim Weterings Contributions from Brennan Goddard Marta Sans Merce Benoit Riffaud Marcel Gyr

  2. Outline Introduction TCDS – TCDQ Concept Technical Solutions Planning Status & Conclusion

  3. Introduction TCDS:Fixed diluter block to protect the MSD Septa in the event of an asynchronous firing of the MKD kickers. TCDQ: - Mobile diluter block to protect Q4 magnets in the event of an asynchronous firing of MKD kickers.- Protects the arc at 450GeV and the triplet apertures at 7TeV from small impact parameters bunches.

  4. (Some) Design Parameters • TCDS - Dilute about 6.1 MJ of energy, ~ 1.7% of the energy contained in the LHC beam at 7 TeV. • TCDS - Max. 300°C in MSD vacuum chamber and max. 100°C in the MSD Yoke. • TCDS - Aperture for circulating beam (n1≥ 6.5) • TCDQ - Max. energy deposition in Q4 of ~100 J/g. • TCDQ movement 15 mm (10σ at 7TeV and 450GeV)withprecision of 0.25mm (0.5 σ at 7TeV). • Nominal vacuum pressure of <10-8 Pa. • Assure a low transverse machine impedance. • Limit radiation exposure of personnel.

  5. TCDS Concept Functional Specification LHC-TCDS-ES-0001 (EDMS 393973) 0.5m Ti 4.5 g/cm3 1m AlN 3.31g/cm3 1m Graphite 1.77 g/cm3 2m Carbon Composite 1.4 g/cm3 1.5m Graphite 1.77 g/cm3

  6. TCDS Technical Solution MSD • Two 3 meter long vacuum tanks – Ø250mm. • Two sublimators and two 400l/s ion pumps/tank. • ~500mm for interconnection. • Independent supports with 3 point alignment.

  7. TCDS Technical Solution Absorber Blocks CirculatingBeam ExtractedBeam

  8. TCDS Planning

  9. TCDQ Concept Functional Specification LHC-TCDQ-ES-0001 (EDMS 01/2004) • Initial MARS simulations resulted in a 10m C + 1m Fe structure.(N. Mokov et al., Fermilab, FN-0724) • Iterations in FLUKA are ongoing with Q4 implemented in geometry.(M. Sans Merce AB/ATB) • Preliminary results favour a ‘TCDS-Type’, but longer, structure.

  10. TCDQ Technical Solution Absorber Block TCDS TCDQ Motorisationsystem CirculatingBeam

  11. TCDQ Planning

  12. Status & Conclusion • TCDS Functional Specification approved, TCDQ Functional Specification to be approved 01/2004. • One full time designer is working on the project, with an additional designer starting 01/2004. • Assembly and construction options (in-house vs outsourced) presently being studied in the light of group reçourses and priorities. • Advancement is still according to work unit planning, TCDQ schedule tight but still feasible (no room for delays).

  13. Status & Conclusion • No problems anticipated for the CtC. • No problems anticipated to reach the design parameters. • EDMS / Hardware baseline documentation minor, but present. • Integration studies in collaboration with ICL have started. • Installation issues have not yet been looked at.
