Curriculum Overview Con’t. • Math • Teaching to Kansas Math Standards/Core Curriculum • Problem of the Day (POD) • Math in Focus Curriculum • Typical Lesson • Warm-up • Students in small groups, pairs, or individually (varies) • Students model, draw, write, and talk about the problem • Whole class discussion comparing answers and strategies • Homework Monday-Thursday: review, extension of lesson, games, collecting data

(Full Option Science System) • Three Units: New Plants, Air and Weather, Solids and Liquids • Social Studies • My World Adventures in Time and Place • Six Units: Where We Live; We Belong; People at Work; Our World; It Happened in America; Americans Celebrate

Curriculum Overview Con’t. • Writing • Six Trait Writing Introduce all traits; assess three (Ideas/Content; Organization; Conventions) • Use of graphic organizers • Journal writing • Daily Oral Language (DOL) • Spelling • Words come from high frequency words, pattern words, and reading curriculum • Homework Monday-Thursday • Lists given on Monday • Pre-test on Wednesday or Thursday • Re-test on Friday

Building a Positive and Caring Learning Environment • Teach and Model Six Pillars of Character (Fairness; Responsibility; Citizenship; Trustworthiness; Caring; Respectfulness) • Implement Olweus Bullying Prevention Program • Conduct Weekly Class Meetings • Share Warm Fuzzies • Problem solve with students classroom suggestions and situations • Looks Like Sounds Like

Class Rules and Discipline • Classroom Rules (Created with students) • Use our Monkey Manners • Be ready to work • Be organized • Listen and follow teacher directions • Consequences for choosing to break a rule (Students begin each day on the “Monkey Manners” ) • Monkey move to “Oo-Oo-Oops”: 5 Minutes of Think Time at Recess • Monkey move to “Banana Peel”: 10 Minutes of Think Time at Recess • Monkey out of the jungle: Think Time all of Recess/Phone Call/Note • Principal’s office for serious offenses

Incentives for Responsible Choices • TEAM Tallies: A weekly goal is set and every time we transition and/or finish a subject, a tally mark is placed on the board according to what the class decides. If the class reaches the weekly goal, then they get “Friday Fun Time”. • “Friday Fun Time” may include pajama day, stuffed animal day, movie day, extra recess, popcorn day, etc.

Ways to help at home • Look at Homework Folder daily • Sign and return any homework • Have designated study space • Help child stay organized • Read with child • Work on math facts • Practice spelling words • Call or email with questions and/or concerns • Visit district and school website www.usd383.org • Sign up for In-Touch on the district website

  14. Daily Snacks • Students may bring a nutritious snack from home. The following list is provided to give you ideas. Portions should be small (ie. snack-sized), not a “meal.” • FRUITS AND VEGETABLES (something crisp and fresh~please prepare at home so that your child can eat his/her snack independently carrot/celery sticks apple/apple slices pears broccoli florettes peeled orange slices bananas green pepper slices cucumber slices pineapple seedless grapes melon wedges strawberries (To avoid browning, dip cut fruit in lemon juice.) • OTHER SUGGESTED NUTRITIOUS SNACKS raisins granola bars shelled nuts popcorn dry cereal crackers shelled sunflower seeds • PLEASE DO NOT SEND THESE FOODS (anything messy or that needs a spoon) Candy/gum cheese curls donuts Pudding/jello potato chips fruit pies Fruit tape twinkies/snack cakes twizzlers Other sugary snacks
