In Q4 2002: 26,000 EE & 94,000 CS unemployed (120,000) Highest figures ever for these two groups EE/CS Unemployment Statistics • ~294,000 H-1B visas • 79,100 first time in FY02 (endingSept.) • 215,000 extensions and initial visas in exempt categories (non profits, labs and colleges) • Contrast to : • 235,000 IEEE members • 2955 unemployed members ‘01-’02; (based on reduced rate dues) (~1.25%) • Source U.S. Department of Labor

  9. 9 LOCAL IEEE SECTION & PACE NETWORK PRESENTATIONS To assist unemployed or at-risk members, IEEE-USA has developed three sets of Power Point Slides with Speaker's notes to help local sections and PACE Chairs conduct meetings focusing on: · Resume and Cover Letter Writing (.ppt) · Interviewing Types & Preparation (.ppt) · It's Time For the Interview (.ppt) · Networking (.ppt) These slides were prepared by the IEEE-USA Employment & Career Services Committee in an effort to assist members in improving their resume and cover letter writing skills. The slides also were designed to better prepare your members for what they might expect while interviewing. These presentations explore: What REALLY matters, appearance, behavior, topics to avoid, questions to ask, salary negotiations and what to do after the interview. Contact Scott D. IEEE-USA's Employment and Career Services Committee is charged to develop and • dissemination products and services that assist IEEE members to sustain their • professional development, career satisfaction, and life-long employability. Specific • functions of the committee include: • Improving current employment, career and professional development products • and services. • Assisting local sections located in Regions 1-6 in providing assistance and • information to unemployed members; • Providing Rapid Response Team Workshops for recently laid off employees and to • develop workshops and seminars that will empower engineers in continuously • changing career and employment issues; • Using various feedback mechanisms, such as surveys, to determine the value of • current services to IEEE-USA members and to determine what additional services • and programs are needed and practical. • Increasing the awareness of the members on the need for lifelong learning, and • developing effective materials and presentations to enhance employers' • awareness that encouraging lifelong individual continuing education is in their • best interests. • Studying and communicating successful career development strategies for • engineers
