Significant Events • Greek and Roman texts were rediscovered • 1492, Bedlam Asylum opened to receive mental disability patients • In 1492 the discovery of the “New World” was made by Christopher Columbus. • In 1350 the black death plague went from Florence to Europe. Doctors had no idea how to treat it. • First medical school were built in this time

  3. Politics • January 1524, European Wars of Religion begin • January 1, 1559, Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 1 • Many city states were appearing in this time

  4. Interesting Information • Physicians were considered uneducated and were self taught. Unskilled compared to today’s physicians • Renaissance surgeons hurt more patients than they helped • People with disabilities had no rights; political or moral • Dissection of human bodies was acceptable

  5. Sir Christopher Wren • He made the first Intravascular drip in 1656 • IV consisted of an animal bladder and a sharpened quill • Also experimented with kanine blood transfusion • Born October 20, 1632 • Died February 25, 1723

  6. ZachariusJannsen • Invented the Microscope in 1590’s • Born in 1580 • Died in 1638 • He was a spectacle maker, and created lenses with his father to help people with poor eye sight. Had a 9x magnification power

Andreas Vesalius • Born December 31, 1514 • Died October 15, 1564 • Dissected human bodies which helped further understand the human anatomy. • He wrote many books about his observations. • Also wrote the most influential books on human anatomy De Humani Corporis Fabrica • Sometimes called the founder of modern human anatomy.

Ambroise Pare • Born 1510 • Died 1590 • He was the royal surgeon for kings henry 11, Francis 11, Charles the fifth, and Henry the third. • He was a leader in surgical techniques and battlefield medicine, especially the treatment of wounds. • He was an anatomist and invented several surgical instruments. • He also came up with the ligature of arteries (which is closing of an anatomical structure with a piece of thread) during amputation and used it instead of cauterization which could kill patients from shock.

William Harvey • Published An Anatomical Study of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals in 1628 • Described in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped through the body by the heart. • Born April 1, 1578 • Died June 3, 1657 • After his death William Harvey Hospital was constructed miles from his birthplace • He was also king Charles private physician

  10. RELIGION • The reformation of the Roman Catholic Church occurred • Most of the people in the Renaissance Era are Christian. • Most of the art that was created in this era had something to do with the dedication to the church. • The church was very powerful

  11. Economy • With the appearance of many City states there were an abundance of travelers that brought ideas and many goods to the cities. • The economy during the renaissance was booming with art and materials being traded in markets.
