  3. Common Myths • There is one and only one job that is right for you! -Actually, not so. There are many jobs out there for you in which you could be a success. • Once I make a career decision I should never change my mind. -We’re human. Nothing is ever set in stone. We change. Job outlook changes. The tools we use change and new jobs are created everyday. You are capable of many things! Life changes. We adapt.

Common Myths (continued) • The sole purpose of my college degree is vocational training for a particular job. -Not everyone works in the area of their degree field. • Somewhere there is a specific expert who can tell me what I should do with my life. -You have a built-in support network, and resources available, but only you can make decisions for your life. College opens doors. You must walk through them on your own.

  5. Common Myths (continued) • If I wait long enough, my career goals will magically come to me. -Career planning is a deliberate process. This process requires effort & investigation. • I’ll let the current job market determine my career aspirations. -Keeping abreast of the job market is important, but the market changes -40-50% of jobs have yet to be created. You’ve got what it takes to make things happen! Your job may be in the creation process!

Common Myths (continued) • There is a perfect job that will make me absolutely happy. -No job is perfect, but some jobs may be better suited to you than others. • I cannot do some jobs because of my race, gender, or age. -Self-esteem, self-confidence, can make one feel limited; Use facts and reality when making career decisions. Consider your personality and profile. You must believe to achieve.

  7. Common Myths (continued) • If I want something bad enough, I will somehow get it! -Being realistic in your career aspirations is important. Consider all of your abilities, interests and your life circumstances. -Have an alternative in mind. Career planning is a life long and evolving process. Sometimes it’s best to see a professional who can help guide your through the process.

  8. The Latest Job Trends Hottest jobs in YOUR area.

Research the Latest Job Trends • Definitely want to look at local markets, but don’t limit yourself. • If you’re willing to move, even within your own state you may be more marketable. • Trends vary even within states. • For the latest trends, you can log onto The Source • The TN Dept. of Labor & Workforce Development lists “Hot Jobs” under Publications • www.tennessee.gov/labor-wfd/source

Be Proactive • Begin building a resume, portfolio etc. • Gain on-the-job experience (entry level) • Internship/Practicum • Volunteering • Attend job fairs & network • Practice or attend mock interviews • Attend workshops and seminars in your area of interest and keep records, proof etc. Make a decision to gain experience. Make a decision to gain knowledge.

Enhance Your Profile • Perform some self-discovery • Career assessments • Professional counselors, advisors • Assess strengths and weaknesses. • Enhance your portfolio -Keep photos & samples of work • Consider what you are looking for in a job. -flexibility? lots of money? Success? Recognition? service, dressing professionally or comfortably? etc. A job that fits who you are is best! Why do you think you want this career?

Start Networking Now • You can begin this process by getting to know people in your classes and in the work place. • Your faculty advisor • Professionals in the field • Folks you meet at conferences etc. • Keep a record of who you meet and if someone offers to help you “someday” be sure to get their information. 65% of job lead sources come from networking! People you meet now, could help you later!

TOOLS for decision making • Support system The people who keep you motivated -family -counselors -faculty & advisors -a mentor -someone who made an impression • Career Assessments • Current job information & stats • Your personal profile • Your current experience You do have a support system! All of this together will help you decide.

  14. Personal Profile • What are your skills? • What are your preferences? • Are you a numbers person? • Are you a writer? • Are you hands-on? • Do you prefer to be around people or to be alone? • Do you like to solve problems? • Are you creative?
