  1. IB Progression Model SCHS

  2. How do I earn an IB Diploma? Successfully complete the extended essay, TOK, and CAS requirements

  3. How do I earn an IB Diploma Successfully complete the internal and external requirements of 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses

  4. How do I earn an IB Diploma Earn a minimum of 24 points (each subject is graded on a 1-7 scale + a maximum of 3 points for the core elements of the programme) What is the highest number of points possible?

  5. 1 Very Poor • 2 Poor • 3 Mediocre • 4 Satisfactory • 5 Good • 6 Very Good • 7 Excellent

  6. How do I earn an IB Diploma? • There are also minimum requirements for each group • There are some students who get 24 points but not an IB diploma

  7. Selection of the HL/SL courses is critical • You have to have 12 HL Points! • You can not get a “3”or below on an HL exam • Only if you can get a combo of 28 points will they allow you to dip below the “2” mark in an HL class

  8. Assessment • The International Baccalaureate assesses student work as direct evidence of achievement against the stated goals of the Diploma Programme courses

  9. Assessment • Goals: • a broad and balanced, yet academically demanding, programme of study • the development of critical-thinking and reflective skills • the development of research skills • the development of independent learning skills • the development of intercultural understanding • a globally recognized university entrance qualification.

  10. Assessment • Diploma Programme assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in fulfilling these goals, for example:

  11. Assessment • analysing and presenting information • evaluating and constructing arguments • solving problems creatively.

  12. Assessment • Basic skills are also assessed, including: • retaining knowledge • understanding key concepts • applying standard methods

  13. Assessment • In addition to academic skills, Diploma Programme assessment encourages an international outlook and intercultural skills where appropriate. • Assessment tasks are designed to support and encourage good classroom teaching and learning. • Student results are determined by performance against set standards, not by each student's position in the overall rank order.

  14. Internal Assessments • Assessment tasks done in the school during the course of study • They are scored by your teacher

  15. Examples • oral work in languages • fieldwork in geography • laboratory work in the sciences • investigations in mathematics

  16. Internal Assessments • IAs are also audited by an external examiner • The IBO will request a sample of work to be scored • This is to ensure that the teacher is grading fairly

  17. Internal Assessments • Normally contribute between 20 – 30% of the total mark for a course • Exception: The arts

  18. External Assessments • Students take written examinations (papers) at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners.

  19. Examples • essays • structured problems • short-response questions • data-response questions • text-response questions • case-study questions • multiple-choice questions (limited use of these).

  20. Other External Assessments • Extended Essay • TOK essays

  21. Students can choose to study for individual subject certificates, rather than the full diploma, if the diploma combination does not best meet their individual needs or circumstances. But not in Hillsborough county

  22. You will know if you got the IB diploma on July 5th

  23. Generally about 80% of Diploma Programme students are awarded the diploma each examination session. Fewer than 1% of students gain 45 points.

  24. I know it sounds odd, but… • An IB diploma does not guarantee a high school diploma • And vice versa
