Established in 1909, CHCCS is located near the University of North Carolina and the Research Triangle Park or RTP. A decision to move many elementary school students was reached after several months of deliberation. Several school board members criticized the process during a Thursday’s 5-2 vote. Chairwoman Michelle Brownstein said she and board members Mike Kelley & James Barrett criticized various aspects of the planning process and the data used in creating the plans.   10. District & The Budget • While the CHCCS District is a premier district in the Triangle area, it has gone through some significant budget uncertainty. The past few years there have been reductions in excess of 7.6 million dollars. • There have been reductions in staff positions, supplies, equipment, and athletics. • State employees will not receive a wage increase. • Priorities for the 2012-13 School year there will be implementation of the Common Core & State Essential Standards. • Each Middle School will have a Math Coach.   11. School Description • Smith Middle School opened in August 2001. It is 128,000 square feet and has a capacity of 732 students. For the 2012-2013 school year, our projected enrollment is 755. • Smith Middle School has achieved several distinctions during the past four years. • In 2012 we were again recognized as an Honor School of Excellence and met AYP. • Recognized through the North Carolina Positive Behavior Support Program as an Exemplar School in 2009-12. • Home school for the district program for highly gifted students. The program, which is called LEAP. • Athletic teams also excel. Smith won several OPAC championships or OPAC Southern Division championships in 2011-12.   12. School Staff • The certified teaching staff is made up of 71 positions. The certified staff have Bachelor Degrees, 39% have Masters Degrees or higher, and 3% have a Doctorate. 30 teachers have less than ten years of experience and 41 have ten or more years of experience. • Ten teachers have earned National Board Certification. • The administrative team consists of one male and one female, both with Masters of School Administration. The principal has seven years of experience; the assistant principal has two years of experience.   13. Student Population • Smith Middle School serves 756 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 • There are 381 boys and 375 girls in attendance. The population is 23% Asian, 11% Hispanic, 13% Black, 46% White, and 7% Multi-Racial or other. Our total non-White population is 54%. • English Language Learner (ELL) population is approximately 70 students (9.25%). These languages include: Spanish, Korean, Karen, Burmese, French, Mandarin Chinese, Bengali, Ga, Icelandic, German, Japanese, Turkish, and others. • Exceptional Education (EC) population totals 71 students. • Academically Gifted population totals 315 (41%) • Approximately 25% of Smith students qualify for Federal Free &Reduced Lunch program. SIT & PTSA • SIT • Their mission is to “prepare all students for academic and social success in both middle school and beyond, by establishing a foundation of learning and engaged exploration of academic, career, and cultural opportunities from all cultures and regions of the world, in a global 21st century environment.” • PTSA • Coordinates teacher appreciation & community events, provides funds for programs and supplies, and advocates for children. Current Library Program • Media Specialist: Natalie Sapkarov • Media Assistant: Anna-Marie Pellett • Strives to meet the needs of all it patrons and diverse student body, and runs a Flex-Schedule. • Mission statement stresses the importance of collaboration in education, and on developing a media center that supports the growing significance of information literacy skills for the 21st century learner. • Cites multiple intellectual freedom statements including the ALA's Library Bill of Rights and NCTE's Students Right to Read.
