  2. Introduction The Coptic church is more than 19 centuries old, and has an interesting rite. The Copts regard themselves as strong defendants of the Christian Faith. Some prophecies in the bible talk about the Copts.

  3. The OriginWhen did this rite originate?Where did it originate?Who founded this rite?- This rite was founded by St. Mark in the 1st century, AD. It began in Alexandria, Egypt. St. Mark was one of the 70 apostles of Christ. One of St. Mark’s ancestors is the current pope of the Copts.

  4. Special Features and Traditions TRADITIONS It is a tradition to go and pray in 7 different Coptic churches on Holy Thursday. Coptics walk to each church with family and friends. Coptics fast before Easter. They fast for 55 days, and break their fast on Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday they can only eat fish and eggs. They can also only wear new clothes on Easter Sunday. SPECIAL FEATURES One of the special features in Coptic churches is the mosaic. Normally it is gold coloured. Gold mosaic is a special symbol in the Coptic rite. Coptic art is another special feature. It is quite unique. Coptic art has a simple outline with a small amount of detail, making it easy to recognize.

Similarities between the Roman Catholics and the Coptic Catholics • Both rites have a cross as a symbol • Both rites believe in Jesus • Both rites believe in Mary • Both rites believe in Joseph • Both rites celebrate Easter, Holy week and Christmas • Both rites have the word ‘catholic’ in their names • Both rites have a pope

Interesting Facts • The bible was written by a Copt • The Coptic calendar is the oldest in history • The Coptic calendar originated 3 millennia before Christ • The Coptic calendar has 13 months • Each month on the Coptic calendar has around 20 days • Coptics fast 210 out of the 356 days in the year • Coptics celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January
