  1. Make sure the bottom of the crucible is glowing bright orange as shown or the Mg will not ignite.

  2. Here is the correct way to use the tongs, FIRMLY clamp on the hole in the lid.

  3. After removing lid- be sure to place it upside down of the lab top.

  4. Here is the Mg before heating- make sure each piece is in contact with the bottom of the crucible.

  5. Here is the Magnesium after the first heating.

  6. Always place the stirring rod with its end over the sink so any MgO will not be lost.

  7. Here the powdered MgO is heated without a cover- notice the glow spreading across the bottom of the crucible.

  8. Add enough water that the powder is moist throughout, you can add too little, just don’t overdo it.
