  2. What are health checks? A health check is a good way to help you stay healthy

  3. Health checks help to find medical problems • Hearing problems • Eye problems • Routine screening • Cervical smears and mammograms

  4. Three studies • We wanted to know what it is like for people with learning disability to have a health check? • We wanted to know what doctors and nurses do in a health check? • We also wanted to know what it is like for doctors and nurses to try and do health checks?

  5. We wanted to know what doctors and nurses do in a health check?

  6. Where did we go? We looked at information from over 160 doctor’s surgeries. We looked at the notes of over 4,000 people with learning disability.

  7. What did we find? Most doctors’ surgeries are doing health checks. More people with learning disability are having health checks

  8. What did we find? People with learning disability have other problems like diabetes, asthma and being overweight.

  9. What is wrong with the health checks? Only half of the people with learning disability are getting health checks. Some parts of the health check are not being done as well as others.

  10. What did people with learning disability think about Health Checks? • Most were happy to have a health check • Some parts of the health check may not be done as well • Hearing check • Eye check • Health promotion

  11. Examples of Reasonable Adjustments Some Doctors’ Surgeries will phone you to make an appointment for a health check and call again to remind you. Some doctors’ surgeries give you an appointment at a time when it suits you. Some doctors will come and see you in your home to do a health check

  12. What is it like for doctors and nurses to try and do health checks?

  13. What did we find? The extra money helped doctors and nurses to make time to do the health checks

  14. Doctors and nurses feel they are getting better at doing health checks

  15. What could be better? Some doctors feel the health check could be made better. So that they can listen more to what people with learning disability want and need.

  16. What could be better? Doctors would like to offer the best health care to everyone with learning disability.

  17. What could be better? Young people with learning disability are not receiving health checks.

  18. What could be better? To make health checks work better doctors, nurses and people with learning disability need to work together and thinks about what we can do differently.
