  2. Health Protection - Findings No appetite for major structural change Capacity and capability an issue for some Boards National standards and protocols HPS – effective, but challenges around capacity and capability Interface between HPS and Boards Interface between HPS and the HPA

  3. Health Protection – Implementation Issues Capacity and capability in Boards, including staff skill mix Scope for sharing functions? Review the role of networks Clarify the interface between HPS and Boards Clarify roles of HPS and the Health Protection Network in setting national standards, protocols etc and workforce development Develop relationship between HPS and HPA to address capacity and capability challenges

Healthcare effectiveness and quality - findings Important for public health credibility and engagement but variable between Boards Capacity and capability can be an issue Need for public health to inform prioritisation and major decisions in Boards DsPH already have a corporate Board role. HIA could strengthen PH engagement

  5. Healthcare effectiveness and quality – implementation issues Clarify the roles of DPH and medical director Consider different models for delivering specialist PH function Clarify role of DPH in major service and financial strategies

  6. Role of the DPH - findings Key leadership role in Boards and with Board partners and community Variation in current practice Currently no specific development programme or succession planning for DsPH Recent changes suggest need to redefine core public health functions and role of the DPH

  7. Role of the DPH – implementation issues Clarify the role of the DPH Clarify whether core PH functions led by DsPH should be redefined Develop programmes/opportunities for leadership development and succession planning

  8. Networks Networking an important concept and essential in parts of Scotland Networks can range from sharing good practice to hosting functions Form needs to follow function Review networking in public health
