The Problem • Most boys drop out between 7th- 8th grade to work as child laborers. • Those who stay in school have trouble maintaining grades as parents are illiterate. • Most girls from the slums are forced to drop out of school once they reach puberty. Forced to work as domestic help to supplement family income. Percentage married by 18 years (2000-2010) = 47%* * 2010 UNICEF report on India www.ashanet.org/atlanta

  8. Nishtha Night Shelter for Children of Sex Workers in West Bengal • ANNUAL BUDGET: $5000 • BACKGROUND: Extreme poverty and starvation forces women to take up prostitution. The women lack basic human rights. •  Children born to sex workers grow up amidst extreme poverty, squalor and crime in the brothels. Most do not go to school. •  Children are physically and sexually abused frequently by the clients. • Exposed to crime, alcohol and drugs at a very early age. • Significant majority of boys succumb to a life of crime. Almost 100% of the girls take up or are kidnapped and forced into prostitution www.ashanet.org/atlanta

  9. NishthaNight Shelter for Children of Sex Workers in West Bengal • ACTION: Since 2006, NISHTHA and ASHA Atlanta have been running a day and night shelter for the children of the sex workers. The shelter is open year round. • 32 children of ages 2.5 to 14 years come to the shelter every night. •  The night shelter provides • Safety and emotional support • Food and clothing • Education and recreational activities • Many of the children have been accepted to local schools through Nishtha’s help. For the first time in the history of Baruipur, two girl children of sex workers from the shelter have been accepted into the local college www.ashanet.org/atlanta

Asha Atlanta Projects for 2012 • Nishtha: Night shelter, food and health facilities for children of sex workers in the Baruipur red light districut in West Bengal. $5000 • Nishtha Jagran: Education to kids at risk from 4 villages in South 24 Paraganas district, West Bengal. $3000 • Nishtha After School Program: After school education support for children of sex workers to coach students from 6th to 10th grades. $1500 • BCT (Bhagavathula Charitable Trust): Vocational training programs to 400 youths in Vizag district, Andhra Pradesh. $1500 • Trinita Society for Children: Education, vocation training and alternate educational support to child laborers and children of sex-workers living in slums of Kolkota, West Bengal. $6200 • Inseed: Alternate literacy centre, toy and book library for children who do not have access to formal education in Muktangan village near Nashik, Maharashtra. $2000 • GVT (Gram Vikas Trust): Provide bicycles to high school girl students in remote villages in Gujarat, India to decrease female to male school dropout ratio. $1500 • ViklangVidyalaya: Provides education, food and shelter for physically challenged children in Sitamarhi dist.
