Fremont expeditions – Fremont County 1845 - United Statesclaims all of Colorado 1848 – Land south of Arkansas River is part of Mexico 1854 – Land north of the Arkansas River becomes part of Kansas Territory 1861 – COLORADO becomes a territory with present boundaries 1876 – COLORADO becomes A State of the USA

  4. THE EVOLUTION OF FREMONT COUNTY Colorado Territory was established by Congress on 28 February 1861. On 9 September 1861, the first Territorial Legislative Assembly met in Denver and divided the Territory into seventeen counties. Fremont County is one of the original counties. It initially encompassed what is now Custer County, which was formed in 1877, and part of Teller County, which was formed in 1899. Fremont County was named for Colonel John C. Fremont, who explored Fremont County during several expeditions from 1843 – 1848.
