Performance Expectations • SYSA: Systems & Subsystems • Given a system, identify subsystems and the larger system it is a part of. • SYSB: Boundaries of Systems • Describe where the boundaries of a system should be drawn to investigate a question. • Explain factors that might influence where the boundaries of the system can be drawn for the purposes of an investigation to answer the question

SYSC: Inputs & Outputs between Systems • Give an example of an output of matter or energy from a system that can become input for another system • SYSD: Open & Closed Systems: • Describe whether a given system is open or closed in terms of matter and/or energy • SYSE: Changes in Inputs to Systems: • Predict how a given open system is likely to change if the input of matter or energy is more or less than the output

  4. Sometimes the output from one system can become the input of another system. One output from the person (system) is the energy that is the input of the bicycle system.

  5. What are the 3 separate systems: • Blue Shirt Person • White Shirt Person • Soccer Ball • What output may also be an input? • Kinetic energy of blue person’s foot (output) becomes the kinetic energy of the soccer ball (input)

  7. Input… • In order to carry out their purpose, systems need an input of some kind. • Matter • Energy

  8. Output… • Outputs from a system can include: • Matter • Energy Sometimes the output from one system can become the input for another system.

  9. Open Systems • An open system is a system in which both matter and energy can enter and leave. • What kinds of energy are inputs and outputs for this system? • What kinds of matter are inputs and outputs for this system?

  10. Closed Systems • In a closed system, matter cannot enter and leave. • Only energy can enter and leave. • What kinds of energy are inputs and outputs for this system? • Why can’t matter enter or leave the system?

Boundaries can change… • When the boundaries of a system change, the system can become open or closed • Boundaries can physically change, for example when part of a forest is cut down or a container is sealed. • We can change boundaries when we want to study a smaller or larger aspect of the system.

  14. The soda can is a closed system. Change the boundaries… The soda can becomes an open system.

  15. Plants are open systems. They have parts that help them survive and grow. They input energy – light, and matter – water, carbon dioxide, minerals. They output, or give off, matter - oxygen, new leaves …

  16. Change the Boundary • Inputs? • Outputs? • Open or Closed? Why? • If we open the terrarium the output (Oxygen gas) becomes an input for what?
