  1. Conventions

  2. general introduction to settings Titles Plot establishment Scenes to capture attention What are the conventions of all trailers? Revealing but not telling scenes Introduction of characters

  3. Conventions of trailers from each genre Sci-Fi Thriller Adventure • Inhuman beings (aliens, robots, monsters) • Futuristic or space settings • Gadgets • Advanced technology (holograms, hover cars) • Abstract architecture • Enigma • Action • Suspense • Quick cuts (to create a faster pace or establish plot) • Interesting settings (lost cities, other worlds) • Setting establishment Horror Comedies Romance • Upbeat music • Witty lines • Main plot developed • Introduction to characters • Light felt music • Romantic moments • Suspense • Fear • Screaming • Eerie music • Flashes (?) • Romance • Main emphasis on characters (differences)

  4. Star Wars: Episode III MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Paul Blart: Mall Cop • Suspense • Action • Weapons/gadgets • Explosions • Quick cuts • Big Bold font (dynamite, masculine font) • Humour • Unusual editing to emphasise humour • Mainly dialogue • Upbeat music • Established storyline • Spaceships • Outer World • Aliens • Gadgets/ Weapons • Advanced technologies • Abstract Architecture • Robots

  5. differences Similarities • The main similarities were that they all had a mixture of revealing scenes that established the plot but still didn’t give away the whole film. • Both sci-fi and thriller trailers featured gadgets and weapons and advanced technologies. • They all featured the title (which were all in suitable fonts). • The Star Wars trailer featured longer scenes to focus on the setting – showing that setting is important as it is the basis of a sci-fi film. • Music was a main feature in the Mission Impossible trailer as the fast music set the pace of the film however it was not prominent as it was the dialogue that was the main feature. This shows that thriller films mainly focus on the atmosphere whereas in comedies it is the humour that is emphasised upon.
