  2. When they look at the Mazda 6, Perth based drivers are sure to be impressed with the model range. In recent years we have seen the SUV take over all expectations in the Australian car sales numbers. As such, we don’t see as may touring sedans or hatches that can capture the imagination. However, this has changed with the Mazda 6 Touring sedan, the diesel car certainly looks the part, but how will it fare in this brief review?

  3. At a Glance The new diesel engine is fantastically smooth and powerful, and there is plenty of new tech and safety features on board. The Mazda 6 hasn’t been updated aesthetically, but it’s worth mentioning that this is a very attractive car anyway. As you move up through the variants into premium territory, there is a super slick 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine available. However, as a tourer, we think that the updated and quieter diesel is the better choice. The Mazda 6 may be getting a little long in the tooth now, but Mazda is working hard to keep it relevant until the new model is revealed.

  4. The Diesel Engine We’ve already mentioned the diesel engine, but it really did impress us, and it’s worth talking about a little more. Mazda should get some credit for not carrying the older diesel power plant across to this latest model. Instead, they went back the drawing board and worked harder at making this diesel engine punch and quiet. This spec of the Mazda 6 Touring diesel and the base level Sport both feature this diesel unit. This is significantly more expensive than those models featuring the 2.5L turbo petrol engine, and you can really feel that difference in refinement.

Features of Diesel Engine The diesel engine is a 2.2L turbocharged engine that features refinements, such as a new multi-stage ignition combustion chamber, a timer feature to counter engine knocking, a reworked coolant control unit and precise piezo injectors. This is a very smooth diesel engine with plenty of muscular mid range performance and plenty of torque on hand. The engine generates 140 kW of power which is an increase of 129kW compared to the outgoing model. The torque has also climbed from the previous models 420 Nm to the new figure of 450 Nm at 2,000 rpm respectively.

  6. The engine on the Mazda 6 Touring diesel is paired with a six speed automatic transmission equipped with a torque converter. There is an option to use a manual setting for more feedback, but there is no sport mode for more aggressive downshifting. Despite this, there is a wider ratio that’s well spread across the engines torque range meaning that gear changes are never hesitant or confusing.
