Middle Grades Requirements NEW PROPOSED • See handout – DRAFT bill language • 1003.4156 – General requirements for middle grades promotion • Algebra 1 EOC constitutes 30% of the student’s final course average • For high school credit • Student must pass the course with EOC results • To graduate • Student must pass the EOC or earn a comparative score

Middle Grades PromotionS. 1003.4156, F.S. • To be promoted to grade 9, successful completion of • Beginning in 2012-2013, students enrolled in high school Geometry or Biology must take the EOC • EOC performance constitutes 30% of the student’s final course grade • Passing grade must be earned to earn high school credit • Beginning in 2012-2013, one course must be at least a one-semester civics education course • Beginning in 2013-2014, a student must take the Civics EOC and EOC performance constitutes 30% of the student’s final course grade • See new proposed language on transfer (c) – this will most likely be changed again but the intent should remain Students enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, or Biology must take the EOC and are not required to take the corresponding grade-level FCAT.

Academically Challenging Curriculum to Enhance Learning (ACCEL) Options S. 1002.3015, F.S. • Each school district must offer rigorous industry certifications that are articulated to college credit • Award of a standard diploma per s. 1003.4282(3)(a)-(e), F.S. (current language) • Identical to the 24-credit program option except • 1 credit PE not required • 3 electives instead of 8 • 18 total credits (student may earn additional credits)

  7. 1003.4282(3)(a)-(e) (current language) • Four credits in English Language Arts (ELA I-IV, equivalent or accelerated) • Pass 10th grade FCAT Reading • Four credits in mathematics – Algebra I and Geometry, must take both EOCs which constitute 30% of the student’s course grades and pass the Algebra I EOC • Three credits in science – Biology I, must take the EOC which constitutes 30% of the student’s course grade • Three credits in social studies – US History, must take the EOC which constitutes 30% of the student’s course grade; economics with financial literacy

Table Assignment NEW PROPOSED • At each table – review the proposed DRAFT Section 1003.4282 language and identify • ACCEL requirements for high school students who entered grade 9 prior to 2010-2011 (10)(a) • ACCEL requirements for high school students who entered grade 9 in 2010-2011 (10)(b) • ACCEL requirements for high school students who entered grade 9 in 2011-2012 (10)(c) • ACCEL requirements for high school students who entered grade 9 in 2012-2013 (10)(d)

  13. When Accelerated – Which Assessment? • The student should participate in the FCAT assessment that matches the course number the student is receiving instruction in. If a student is accelerated to a higher grade level course the student should participate in that grade level assessment. • Exceptions for skipping • Third grade reading – this is a statewide promotion requirement • Civics – this is a middle grades promotion requirement • 10th grade reading – this is a statewide graduation requirement • EOCs – these are statewide graduation requirements

Certificate of Completion NEW PROPOSED • See lines 180-185 • There was no intent to change this, work with your general counsel regarding students who fall between July 1, 2013, and new language being passed in 2014 to determine best course of action when granting a certificate of completion. Major differences: • Passing required credits • Passing required assessments

Scholar Designation • Pass the 11th grade ELA assessment (Not one yet) • Earn one credit in Algebra II and one credit in statistics or an equally rigorous course; pass the Algebra II assessment (Not one yet) • Pass the Biology I EOC; earn one credit in chemistry or physics and one credit in a course equally rigorous to chemistry or physics • Pass the US History EOC • Earn two credits in the same foreign language • Earn at lest one credit in an accelerated course (AP, AICE, IB, or DE)

NEW PROPOSED • “If a transfer student’s transcript shows a final course grade and course credit in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology I, or United States History the transferring course final grade and credit shall be honored without the student taking the requisite statewide, standardized EOC assessment and without the assessment results constituting 30 percent of the student’s final course grade.”

  23. Statewide, Standardized Assessment Results Waiver – S. 1008.22(3)(c)2., F.S. What requirements must a student meet to be considered for an assessment results waiver? A student must meet all of the following criteria: • Be identified as a student with a disability, as defined in s. 1007.02(2), F.S. • Have an active IEP • Have demonstrated, as determined by the IEP team, achievement of the course standards
