Mission Statement/Goals • The New Paltz Middle School is a community of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff that creates a nurturing and supportive environment where learners feel safe to set goals, achieve success, and work towards fulfilling their potential. Ideals such as compassion, empathy, lasting friendships, academic achievement, and personal growth are encouraged daily within our learning community. • We: • are centered on the whole child • Understand the social, emotional and physical changes of students this age • Recognize individual needs • Encourage belonging • Place emphasis on developing personal responsibility • Offer varied experiences for our children to try new things and succeed

  6. Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) • Mr. Daniel Glenn is the coordinator for our building • established to protect all students from harassment, bullying, cyberbullying and discrimination.

  7. Schedule – A/B schedule Hours – 7:45-2:35 (9 periods) Classes Available: 1st Period Begins at 7:55 • English, Social Studies, Science, Math – meet everyday • Physical Education – meet every other day • Art – meet every other day • Spanish – meet every other day • Technology – Project Lead the Way • Music: Band/Chorus or General Music

  8. Community Building Groups (CBG) Every student is assigned to a Community Building Group. The students will meet their group members and teacher on the first day of school. These groups will meet throughout the year with the goal of building community and creating a culture of care for our Middle School.

  9. Prep Tasks • Students will have prep task assigned – they are not graded • Prep tasks will be extension or practice of classwork • If student has not completed prep task – the teacher will notify you to create a plan of action • Library is open after school everyday • Computers are available for student use

  10. Policies and After School procedures No cell phone policy – phones are powered off in the locker during the school day • If student is caught using their cell phone – 2 days detention and a parent/guardian has to pick up phone from school • No cell phone use on class/field trip We have a late bus that runs everyday afterschool. It arrives at our school around 3:45. Students need a pass from a teacher to ride the late bus . Please make sure your child knows his/her afterschool plans before they come to school

  11. Planners/Agendas • Every student is given a planner/agenda at the beginning of the year • Student handbook is printed inside • This is used as hall pass • Used to help organize students – write down assignments

  13. Co-Recs • There will be three co-recs this year. Each co-rec will offer a fun theme. Co-recs are on Fridays ( November 15, January 24 and March 27) from 7-9pm. • Students come to the Middle school and can play basketball in the gym, play board games and ping pong in the cafeteria or listen to/dance to music by a DJ in the auditorium. • There is food for sale provided by the PTA • We need chaperones

Don’t Be a Monster Assembly Special 6th Grade Opportunities: • Discuss three types of bullying at length – cyber, • relational, and physical. • Explain the relevancy of up-to-date bullying • statistics. • Talk about where bullying happens, why it happens, • effects, and why students are hesitant to report. • Provide students with tools to address bullying as • they see it happening in their schools. We bust • anti-bullying myths and help students in school feel • empowered. • Provide resources should they need additional • assistance after the assembly.

  17. Special 6th Grade Opportunities: Ashokan Field Trip Students will be learning about aquatic ecology as well as participating in team building activities

Special 6th Grade Opportunities: • Mohonk Trip – Scheduled in the Fall During the 6th grade trip to Mohonk Preserve students will have the opportunity to hike from Picnic Lodge up to Skytop and learn about the condition of our local waters by comparing the presence of aquatic life and pH measurements of several bodies of water including: Mohonk Lake, the reservoir at Skytop, and Lily Pond. Students will also have the opportunity to compare their results to rain samples and of Minnewaska Lake. 

  19. Special 6th Grade Opportunities: • Field trip to Challenger Learning Center – usually in the Spring • PTA sponsored trip • Students plan and carry out a simulation of a trip to the moon • Very engaging and interactive

  20. Too Good for Drugs Program • Ulster Prevention Council (UPC) 10 week program • The Ulster Prevention Council works to prevent substance abuse by Ulster County youth and families. UPC provides evidence-based school and community prevention services. • UPC Prevention Educators provide a model prevention education service delivery in Ulster County Schools. Too Good for Drugs fosters confidence, self-efficacy and resistance to substance abuse through goal setting and achievement, responsible decision making, positive conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.

  23. Parent Conferences • Conferences are scheduled through the guidance department • There are 2 scheduled P/T conferences during the year • November 19 • March 12 Parents are welcome to call and schedule a team meeting anytime during the year

It is a pleasure to meet our new incoming 6th graders/new students and their families. • Thank you to the PTA for all the goodies and assistance • You now have time to go with your child to see their locker and walk their schedule. • Please enjoy some refreshments provided by the PTA in the beautiful courtyard
