SUSTAINABLE development HIGH energy PHISICS HUMAN genome eoro Met LOGY Virtual communities • There is a need for integration accross • distributed • heterogeneous • large • dynamic "virtual organisations", making use of a wide set of varied resources belonging to possibly different enterprises… • Examples: High Energy Physics, Earth/Environment, Biology, Industrial Simulations… and also Digital Libraries, Virtual Museums, Open Universities, Social Sciences, eHealth… • … but also strong impact on Industry and Business in general

Flexible control and sharing of distributed resources Access to them is provided in a secure, coordinated, seamless, dynamic and inexpensive way Resources can be distributed world-wide Resources can be of any information type (computing, storage, networking, etc) Global nature of eScience Virtual research organisations

GN2 will enhance the performance offered and will develop solutions to support end to end services, GRID compliance, QoS assurance, seamless access and security. Pan-european second generation GÉANT

EGEE is mission critical for a number of very demanding research communities.

Conclusions • The creation of virtual organisations is key to rationalise investments in research. • Europe is committed to deploy an ambitious eInfrastructure, building on the most advanced networking and Grid technologies. • Current achievement will be expanded and further integrated in the context of new FP6 projects (about to be launched). • TheeInfrastructure will ultimatelly change the way research is done, bringing clear benefits to all the Research Communities and thus contributing to the fast deployment of the European Research Area! • Research Infrastructure require more than technology… require a new culture and newpolicies! EC isco-operating with Member States to devise and implement them! • eHealth can benefit from Grid infrastructures… now!
