  1. Sustainability Across Disciplines Jun Jiao, Portland State University, 0649280 • Intellectual Merit: Focusing on real solutions to pressing problems. PSU’s REU site emphasizes sustainability. We offer students nationwide the opportunity to take part in cutting-edge research spanning multiple disciplines, such as: nanomaterials synthesis (including studies of their physical, electronic and optical properties), characterization of biological and geological samples, nanodevice fabrication (including microbial fuel cells, solar cells, and microscopy tools), and investigations concerning the impact of atmospheric trace gases on climate change. This focus on sustainability draws many applicants and will help position participants for research opportunities in the developing field of green energy and environmental protection. Matthew Smith takes readings from solar panels for his green roof project.

  2. Creating Ongoing OpportunitiesJun Jiao, Portland State University, 0649280 • Broader Impacts: Creating ongoing opportunities for students • Thirteen participants for the 2011 program • At least five students have been invited to stay with their lab group and continue their research beyond the REU program. Many students will even be funded through these labs. • Field trips to local industry leaders including Nike and FEI Company and seminars with Intel engineers provide additional opportunities. 2011 REU Students on a field trip to FEI Company: 3-D glasses allow 3-dimentional viewing of images taken with FEI’s Quanta™ 3D DualBeam™ focused ion beam / scanning electron microscope.
