  3. Youth Football Problem Areas • Way behind the current trends • NO time management • Coaches don’t want to be responsible • Too many kids standing around • Politics

  4. Offensive Line Fundamentals • Need a great coach! • Typically, your least developed players. • Takes time and patience • What they do changes every week! • Give them a chance for success! • Angles / Down Blocking • Double Teams / Cross Blocks • Always go on 2!!! (reset to draw offsides)

  5. O-Line Plays that can help! • Cross Blocks (Louisville) • Kids named it X-Factor • Down Plays • Down, Down, Pull and Kick

  6. Time Management • Plan your week in advance. • Have a schedule or a check list! • List your coaches responsibilities. • Put a time limit on drills (10-15 is ideal) • Know what your priorities are each day.

  7. Individual (15 Min) O-Line: Stance and Steps, Indy Blocks, Tennessee Drill, Baltimore Drill Indy Blocks (10 Min) Partner Up Down Block, Reach Block, Pull and Lead blocks Coach in central location Everyone at the same time Individual Periods

  8. Run Game Scheme O-Line: Work scheme vs. Bags or Cans Inside Run Game Work plays you just practiced No WR’s or DB’s Correct mistakes quickly and be positive Assign a coach to run the scout team Group Periods Run Game

  9. Pass Game Scheme (10 Min) O-Line: Bootleg Drill, Pass rush drill 7 on 7/ Live Pass Rush (10 Min) O-Line: Pass rush vs D-Line Didn’t use much in youth football. Group Periods Pass Game

  10. TEAM PERIOD Live; Quick whistle Work only on what you practiced Make corrections quickly and be positive! Scout team coach for back-ups! “It's not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into the practice.” Team

  11. Bird Dog Drill • Works on Stance and Starts • Step, Freeze…Step, Freeze…Step, Run Thru • Fire Step • Down Step • Pull Step • Reach Step • Coach in a central location • After a couple weeks, this will be fast!

  12. O-Line Stance Pointers • Bend at the hips, not the knees. • Sit back in a chair. • Or, kids get this better…Poop in the woods! • Squat Walks • Heel-Toe Relationship

  14. Individual Blocks • Partner up, all kids at the same time. Coach in the middle.

  16. Drive Block • Warm Up Block • Lead with your eyes • Good squat position • Solid base (wide feet) • Short Choppy steps

  18. Reach Block • 6 Inch lateral step. • Crossover Step • Lateral step and contact • Watch feet…make sure first step is lateral.

  20. Down Block • This is a block usually made away from the play and down toward the next man inside. • Against a penetrator, you should work on getting your head across. • Use correct Step!

  21. Pull and Kickout

  22. Pull and Kickout • Make sure the proper Pull step is taken. • Step and point foot where you are pulling. • Pick foot up and put it down behind your heel! • Watch for kids just pivoting or stepping with improper foot.

  24. Baltimore Drill • 2 Lines • All players are Guards • Working on proper pull steps • First Guard Kicks out • Second Guard, pulls and leads thru • Make sure players finish their blocks! • Simulates our 26 G.O. (Buck Sweep)

  26. Tennessee Drill • 3 Lines: Guard, Center, Guard • Down, Down, Kick-Out Drill • Used on inside Traps • Simulates our 31 O-Trap or 30 G-Trap • Also works on our down blocks for the Tackles and TE’s

  27. Before Pads! • Great time to plan and teach drills! • Take longer here: 20-30 minutes • Teach a new drill each day • Coach the coaches on the drill • Play games! • Soccer/Rugby • Relay races • Practice all drills you will do with pads

  29. Scheme Vs. Bags • Essential, overlooked part of practice! • Set up a defense (4-4, 5-3, 6-2) • Pick just one per week. • Use multiple groups • Everyone participates!! • Go fast; Coach on the run! • Reps, reps, reps • Run all the plays you will use in team. Be specific!

  31. HALF LINE • Try to match up Solid vs. Solid players • However the groups go in Full Backfield Tech, they go the same here. • Live; Quick Whistle

  33. Run Game Scheme O-Line: Work scheme vs. Bags or Cans Running Backs: Handoff Drill (reps) WR Stalk Blocking Inside Run Game Work plays you just practiced No WR’s or DB’s Correct mistakes quickly and be positive Assign a coach to run the scout team Group Periods Run Game

  34. Pass Game Scheme (10 Min) O-Line: Bootleg Drill, Pass rush drill Running Backs: Routes with QB’s WR’s: Routes with QB’s 7 on 7/ Live Pass Rush (10 Min) O-Line: Pass rush vs D-Line Backs and WR: 7 on 7, pass game with a defense; NO LINE Group Periods Pass Game

  36. Transitions • Transitions are the time between drills and segments of practice. • Water breaks are the time for coaches to set-up the next drill; preparing penny’s, cones, bags, etc. • Coaches are all on the same page and focused • Efficient practice and saves time
