    5. Industry Britain had led the industrial world in the 19th century. Britain’s empire, power and wealth was largely a result of this industrial dominance By 1914 Germany and the USA had challenged this domination

    6. Imperialism All the great powers were competing for colonies / territory. An Empire made you wealthy and strong The British feared Germany in Africa. The Austrians feared Serbia / Russia in the Balkans

    7. Nationalism This was an age when all nations wanted to assert their power and independence. Many people felt very patriotic - proud of the national heritage In Europe Slavs, aided by Serbia and Russia, wanted to be free of Austrian rule.

    8. The Arms Race Germany was competing with the UK to build battleships. The British feared an attack on their Empire Germany was competing with Russia and France to expand their armies

    9. Alliances As well as seeking protection in the size of their armies, the countries of Europe sought protection by forming alliances.

    10. Significant Individuals Kaiser Wilhelm II Built up German army and navy Aggressive foreign policy Determined to make Germany a top nation. King George V Determined to keep Britain powerful Czar Nicholas II Russia was still backward country Desire to expand its influence in the Balkans
