  4. Importance of Assessment • At the heart of the learning process. • Shows us what our learner has learned. • Identifies strengths and weaknesses. • Provides evidence of learning

  5. Why Assess? To provide evidence of learning To support the teaching and learning process. Accreditation

  6. What is Literacy? NALA’S Definition of Literacy Literacy involves listening & speaking, reading, writing, numeracy and using everyday technology to communicate and handle information. It includes more than the technical skills of communication: it also has personal, social and economic dimensions.

  7. Initial Assessment • Carried out by Adult Literacy Organiser. • Gives a profile of the learner. • Enables ALO to match learner with tutor.

  8. What is Assessment in ABE? • Informal and flexible. • Goals & Objectives decided together. • Helps learner & tutor to plan the learning & teaching process. • Measures learner progress.

  9. What is Assessment in ABE? • Assessment needs to go beyond technical skills. • Includes confidence, self esteem. • Assessment is cyclical – a constant process of planning and learning and reviewing.

  11. Listening is a Decision Something we must want or choose to do. In this respect, listening is a reflection of our fundamental philosophy, attitude or way of working with and relating to other people.
