  1. MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS • Chapter 4 • Classroom Manual • Page 67 • Lab Manual • Page 105 CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK

  2. OBJECTIVES • Discuss the operation of typical manual transmissions. • Describe the purpose and operation of a synchronizer. • Discuss power flow through a manual transmission. • Compare and contrast transmissions and transaxles. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK

  3. OBJECTIVES • Discuss power flow through a transaxle. • Describe how gears are shifted. • Identify accessories controlled by a manual trans. • Discuss Gear oil. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK

  4. MANUAL TRANS • Purpose to keep engine in normal operating RPM range. • Manual transmissions and transaxles are fundamentally the same. • Can change gear ratios and reverse direction. • Transaxle includes differential in same housing. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK

  5. SLIDING GEAR TRANS • Sliding spur gears. • Gears go in & out of mesh. • If gear speeds are different grinding will occur. • Typically used for reverse in both transmissions and transaxles. Page 69

  6. COLLAR SHIFT TRANS • A collar shift trans has parallel shafts fitted with gears in constant mesh. • If gear speeds are different grinding will occur. • Used for Low gear on some older model transmissions. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 69

  7. SYNCHROMESH TRANS • A synchromesh transmission is a constant mesh, collar shift transmission equipped with synchronizers, which equalize the speed of the shafts and gears before they are engaged. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 69

  8. SYNCHRONIZERS • Purpose to equalize shaft and gear speeds. • Four types • Hub • Sleeve • Blocking Ring • Inserts or spring & ball devices CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 70

  12. TRANSMISSION DESIGNS • Three-Speed Transmission • Three-Speed Transmission /w add-on OD • Four-Speed Transmission • Four-Speed Transmission /w Internal OD • Five-Speed Transmission /w Internal OD • Six-Speed Transmission /w 2 Internal OD’s CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 73 - 74

  13. AFTERMARKET OD • Available for popular standard and automatic transmissions. • Expensive $1,000 to $2,000 • Must shorten drive shaft. • Some are two speed. • Direct and OD • Direct and UnderDrive CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 75

  14. BASIC OPERATION CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 77

  15. DETENT & INTERLOCK • Detent - a ball & spring used to hold a shift rail in position. • Interlock - a oval shaped device used between shift rails so only one gear at a time can be selected. • Rollpin or setscrew - used to attach a shift fork to a shift rail. CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK Page 79
