  1. Frankenstein Chapter 14 Summary

  2. DeLacey & His Family • DeLacey came from a good family in France. • Felix was in the military • Agatha was a lady of the highest distinction

  3. Safie • Muslim • Her father was the cause of the DeLacey family’s ruin. • He was a Turkish merchant. • He got in trouble with the government. • He was arrested, tried and condemned to death.

  4. Felix was accidentally present during the trial and was outraged at the verdict. Felix vows to save this man. Safie’s father promised reward and wealth to Felix. Felix didn’t need this though; until he saw the beautiful Safie. Felix saw her as a treasure.

  5. The Turk did not like the connection between Safie and Felix, but he had promised they could wed as soon as he was safely out of prison. • The creature notes that he does have copies of the letters between Safie and her father and of Felix. The creature feels this will be evidence for Victor to believe his story

  6. Safie’s mother was a Christian Arab, captured and made a slave by the Turks. • Safie’s father saved her life by marrying her. • She taught Safie Christianity and taught her to aspire to higher powers of intellect, and to be independent. • Her mother died.

  7. Safie so wanted to marry a Christian man and live in a country where women were allowed rank in society. • The day before her father’s execution, he escaped with the help of Felix. • Although the Turk allowed his daughter to become close with Felix, he loathed the idea of her marrying a Christian, but also feared the resentment of Felix.

  8. Once safe, the Turk allowed Felix’s plot to be revealed. • Agatha and DeLacey were thrown in to prison – they were there 5 months. • This resulted in the loss of their money, land and possessions. • When they were freed, they all went to live alone in the outskirts of Germany.

  9. The Turk then forbid his daughter to marry Felix – since he had no wealth or land – and for her to return to her native land. • Safie found letters that told where Felix was now living; she then made arrangements, on her own, to go to him.
