  2. AkkusativoderDativ • Nominativ – is the subject of the sentence. • Akkusativ – answers what or whom. • Dativ – answers to whom or for whom. • In the sentence Ich kaufeeinBuch, you know that “Ich” is the subject, “kaufe” is the verb and “einBuch” is the direct object or accusative.

  3. With the dative… Juttarepariert (dem) ihremBruder das Radio.

  4. Without the dative… Juttarepariert (den) ihrenBruder.

  5. With the dative… Herr Rufkocht der Familie das Essen.

  6. Without the dative… Herr Rufkocht die Familie.

  7. Withthe dative… Jens gießt (der) seiner Tante die Blumen.

  8. Withoutthe dative… Jens gießt (die) seine Tante.

  9. Dative (Indirect Object) • Ich kaufe dem Freund eineKarte. • In this sentence “dem Freund” is called the indirect object or dative. • Whereas “eineKarte” is directly connected with the action of the verb, “dem Freund” is indirectly connected with the verb and therefore called the indirect object. • The easiest way to identify the indirect object is to determine if “to” or “for” can be put before the noun. • In the above example, it would be “I am buying a ticket for the friend.” (Or: I am buying the friend a ticket.)

  10. In the plural, the dative article is always den, regardless of the gender of the noun. • To form the dative plural an –n or –en is added to the plural, unless the plural noun already ends in –n or –s.

  11. wer? wen? wem? • wer? You are already familiar with the question word wer? (who?), which refers to the subject (person). • wen? The question word wen? (whom?) refers to the direct object (person). • wem? The question word wem? (to whom? / for whom?) refers to the dative case (person).
