### Number Lines

• You can use a number line to add integers.

• There are two kinds – vertical numbers line and horizontal number lines.

### Horizontal number lines

Negative = Left (red)

Positive = Right (blue)

Rule #1

Same signSum of numbers

• What happens when you add these integers?

• 5 + (-2) = 4. -5 + 2=

• 2. -11 + 7=5. 11 + (-4)=

• 3. -2 + 9 = 6. 8 + (-4)=

Rule #2

• 3 + 0 = 4. 0 + (-2)=

• 2. -1 + 0=5. 0 + 2=

• 3. 6 + 0 = 6. 0 + (-4)=

Rule #3

Zero added to any number equals the original number.

• What happens when you add these integers?

• 3 + (-3)= 4. 2 + (-2)=

• 2. -1 + 1=5. 11 + (-11)=

• 3. 6 + (-6) = 6. 4 + (-4)=

Adding opposites together will equal zero.
