Information and Communication Technology Includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning. New Zealand EGovernment

  3. What is Elearning? Definition of ELearning The Wikipedia states that “Electronic learning or eLearning is a general term used to refer to computer-enhanced learning. It is used interchangeably in so many contexts that it is critical to be clear what one means when one speaks of 'eLearning'. In many respects, it is commonly associated with the field of advanced learning technology (ALT), which deals with both the technologies and associated methodologies in learning using networked and/or multimedia technologies.”

  5. Web 2 • Emergence of tools • Resources and practices • Growth of web logs, wikis, social bookmarking sites, (like del.icio.us), sharing sites and contact sites • Keeps you up to date with what is going on by syndication • Sharing things you have written, getting feedback as writers / readers

Elearning • Covers a wide range of instructional material that can be delivered on a CD-Rom, DVD, over the local area network (LAN) or the internet • Learning through connection and collaboration • Full use of digital technologies • Social software that supports group interaction Shirky 2003 (Roder draft) • Delivers communication between groups • Enables communication between many people • Provides gathering and sharing of resources

It can make learning exciting, engaging and compelling, drawing your audiences senses by emphasising interactivity.Blending traditional teaching styles, workshops and coaching with eLearning tools, creates unique learning experiences and increases students’ competencies and skills bases."   8. Why do we need to build a Vision of elearning Practice? This is because New Zealand has established goals, priorities and strategies for education. These are - Government goals - Education priorities - Early childhood education strategy - Schooling strategy - Tertiary education strategy

The Elearning Overview should include: • Inclusive view and development of an eLearning vision for the whole school • How ICT will be used to improve Learning and Teaching within eLearning • Approaches to Staff Professional Development • Review process – ensuring that the goals within the vision have been reached within the time frame.

  10. Goals • Inclusive • Networking • Interacting between classrooms, other schools worldwide • Professional Development • Access to social software • Interacting, publishing and editing • Multimedia • Games with an educational purpose • Including all concern in the vision

What’s required? • Hardware • Software • Technical support • Internal constraints • Strategic direction • policies • Professional development • cost structures • External constraints • Funding • social tolerance • technology shifts • Effectiveness – more reliant on implementation and delivery practice than on technology

  12. The pedagogy must be appropriate to the level of study – the curriculum AO’s and LO’s • Technology can be applied at any level

Staff Professional Development • Involve staff in Developing their own professional development requirements for learning and teaching elearning • Staff based, self paced learning programme • Note - This development will flow down to students through teacher’s development • Visiting a school that uses elearning effectively • Have an expert present / run workshops • Have follow up workshops for concerns and issues • Have peer support

How can we ensure that it will be a successful experience for all concern? • a set of tools and techniques, not a distinct ‘approach’ or ‘mode’ of learning • usable from wherever you start – face to face, distance, flexible, • multi-faceted and dynamic • Learning activities: • Content-focused teaching, stories, demonstrations, practicals, case studies • eLearning potential: • Simulations, multimedia, eContent, online information searches, quizzes, low-level online discussions, update • Learning activities: • Workshops, debates, seminars, critiques, specialist lectures, interviewing, case studies, investigations, research, collaborative tasks • eLearning potential: • Online discussion-based activities, streamed lectures/ seminars by experts, research, eMarking, updates, additional materials
