  2. Topics • Procurement of Mobile Data Terminals • Our history on Mobile Data • Functional and Technical requirements • Procurement of TETRA radio´s • Procurement of Dispatch System

  3. 1991 Introduction of the MDT (Motorola 9100-10) Our history on Mobile Data (1) • 150 vehicles in use • Key mobile applications: • communication with dispatch center • checking license plates and persons • mail

  4. 1997 TETRA, C2000 project Ready for next generation MDT Our history on Mobile Data (2) • end of life cycle of ´old´ MDT’s • end of current frequency • stronger safety regulations (air bag) • stronger user demands • MOBIPOL application, national standard

  5. May 1999 Touch Screen experiment Our history on Mobile Data (3)  • ´off the shelf´ products are not suited for European cars: • screen size • luminance • environmental conditions • power management • use of materials • A keyboard is necessary for data-input • Touch Screen is an alternative pointing device

  6. Mar 2000 European Tender for a MDT Our history on Mobile Data (4) Key pre conditions: • Car independent solution • Carrier independent solution • Applications: Mobipol and Intranet • Safety • Ergonomics • Operational use • Maintenance • Approved prototypes • Future requirements

  7. Sept 2000 16 suppliers applied for pre-selection, 3 underwent pre-selection, 2 passed the pre-selection, but ... Our history on Mobile Data (5) Current status: no offers  • procedure ´Awarding by negotiation´ • 25 companies are invited for a presentation and react on our requirements • new offers expected in January 2001

  8. Functional and Technical requirements (1) Modular design

  9. Functional and Technical requirements (2) Ergonomics • Readability of screen for both driver and co-driver • Operability of keyboard and pointing device (touch screen or mouse) for co-driver • Size of screen: • lower limit: touchscreen operation • upper limit: safety of mounting • Luminance of screen > 600 Cd/m2 • Contrast and Reflection

  10. Functional and Technical requirements (3) Safety • Maintain integral safety system of the car: • air bags, safety belt, car seat • No increased risk of injury at a car crash: • No loose components • No obstacles for driver and co-driver • choice of materials • Free sight on the road • Emergency button

  11. Now Windows NT Mobipol intranet Near future thin client architecture integration of car controls navigation, AVL electronic payment biometric authentication Blue Tooth, wireless updates speech synthesis and speech recognition Functional and Technical requirements (4) Applications

  12. Functional and Technical requirements (5) Controls • on/off • volume • light intensity of screen • light intensity of keyboard • contrast of screen • signalling of power supply • emergency button

  13. Essential 1 parallel connector 2 serial connectors 1 screen connector 1 mouse connector 1 keyboard connector 1 loudspeaker connector 1 microphone connector 1 power connector 1 SCSI connector Optional 1 USB port 1 Ethernet port 2 extra serial connectors (GPS) 2 free ISA slots 2 free PCI slots Functional and Technical requirements (6) Interfaces and Connectors

  15. Functional and Technical requirements (8) Power management • UPS for back-up of car battery • 4 hours autonomy • intelligent power management • active mode • economy mode • off mode • signalling functions

  16. Functional and Technical requirements (9) Summary • Our MDT specifications are based on a TOTAL solution: • Car and Carrier independent • Safety and Ergonomics • Operational use and Maintenance • prepared for Future requirements • The specifications are available and open for your feedback

  17. Procurement of TETRA radio´s The Pilot Region has stopped the European tender process • lack of functionality • e-t-e-encryption, packet data, dual watch, SIM, ... • lack of accessories • bad speech intelligibility in noisy environment • problems with maintenance and acceptance tests • not possible to do layer 1 tests • 2nd generation radio´s ???

  18. Procurement of Dispatch System Final offer to TetraNed Key subjects of discussion are: • Functionality • Software development • Price Final contract is expected in December 2000

  19. Summary • Mobile Data Terminals • start procedure ´Awarding by negotiation´ • request your feedback on our requirements • TETRA Radio´s • 2nd generation is postponed until end 2002 • 1st generation maybe improved • wait for right moment to start a new tender • Dispatch System • contract expected in December 2000
