  1. How changes in Peep affect AIRWAY PRESSURES AND VOLUMES Mariela Fernandez Joseph D. Lowery Jesse Sparks Edited by Elizabeth Kelley Buzbee AAS, RRT-NPS, RCP

  2. Quick Overview • One Ventilator • Two Test Lungs

  3. Hypothesis Peep and airway pressure have a direct relationship whereas Peep and volume have an inverse relationship.

  4. Two Test Lungs

  5. Test Lung 1 • Compliance set at 50 ml/cmH2O • Resistance set at 10 • Small capacity could not accommodate ventilator settings.

  6. Test Lung 2AKA Blue Betty • Compliance 40 cmH2O • Resistance was set to 1 • (standard resistance for an ETT )

  7. Ventilator Servo I Parameters Using Test Lung 1

  8. Test lung #1Volume Control

  9. Pressure Control

  10. Ventilator Servo I Parameters Using Test Lung 2

  11. Volume Control 400ml

  12. Pressure Control Test lung 2

  13. Conclusion • In pressure control as PEEP is increased pressure goes up and volume goes down. • In volume control as PEEP is increased pressure goes up. ~ PEEP will always increase pressure ~
