  4. Today • Today we’ll read and perform a play about Integrated Pest Management.

  5. Objectives • The learner will read or follow along with a play about Integrated Pest Management. The learner will identify problems and solutions within this play. The learner will write answers to higher order thinking questions using socrative. • I will read a part or just listen to a play about pests at an apple orchard. I will work alone or with a partner to remember the problems and solutions for each season. I will use socrative to answer reflection questions.

  6. Preview • We learned about Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the story Mariana Becomes a Butterfly. • When Mariana saw that the mealybugs had eaten the papayas, she brainstormed some ideas. • Pesticides might also harm other insects that land on the papayas. • So, wasps were introduced to the habitat to kill the mealybugs. • Have you been to an apple orchard? Do you think insects would want to eat apples too? Could IPM be used at an apple orchard?

  7. Read the Text • Assign Roles • Narrator #1 • Narrator #2 • Narrator #3 • Fruit Tree Leaf Roller • Weevil • Apple Moth Larvae • Agricultural Engineer #1 • Agricultural Engineer #2 • Agricultural Engineer #3 • Farmer Bob • Farmer Anne • Chorus (anyone who wants a part)

  8. Read the Text • The play is on my website. • Download both the PDF and the SMART Notebook file. • As we are reading the text, think about what is the problem and solution in each season.

  9. Reflect on the Text • Work alone or with a neighbor to move the pieces in the SMART Notebook file into the correct location. • Questions – on socrative. • Do you think insects can be both problems and solutions? Give examples. • Do you think IPM is technology? Why? • How do agricultural engineers use Integrated Pest Management to help farmers?
