  2. Objectives for this lesson: • Provide a brief overview of each candidate • Describe the main social and political issues that each candidate stands behind • View each candidate’s closing speeches at the final presidential debate • Explain the voting process and how to register to vote

  3. Barack Obama: Quick Facts • Official Title: President of the United States • Age: 51 • Family: Married and two daughters • Education: Harvard Law School • Political Affiliation: Democrat • Religion - Christian

  4. Mitt Romney: Quick Facts • Official Title: Governor of Massachusetts • Age: 65 • Family: Married and has five boys • Education: MBA and law degree from Harvard • Political Affiliation: Republican • Religion – Mormon

Barack Obama: Democrat • Economic Plan - invest in education, small businesses, clean energy, infrastructure, and tax cuts for companies that bring jobs back to the U.S. • Education - cut tuition growth in half over the next decade, increase availability of student aid, more math and science teachers. • Health Care – Make sure that all Americans have access to good health care • Taxes – Cut taxes for the middle class, increase taxes for the wealthy. • Jobs – New manufacturing jobs in clean energy, automobiles, and “Made in America products.”

Mitt Romney: Republican • Energy Independence - minimize regulations against energy production, increase use of natural resources to create energy • Skills to Succeed - focus on job training, bringing jobs back to America, allowing everyone access to education • Trade that Works for America – strengthen trade around the world, cut unfair trade practices (China), open new markets in Latin America • Cut the Deficit – reduce non-security spending by 5%, give state responsibility for programs they can run more effectively. • Champion Small Businesses – reduce taxes on small businesses, protect small businesses from strong arm labor unions, replace Obamacare with health care that works.

How Does the Voting Process Work? • Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th but Ohio allows early voting – Lake County Board of Elections • You must be 18 and registered to vote to be able to votein the election (so the next election, 9-12 grades will be able to vote – and some 8th graders) • You can get voter registration forms from libraries, schools, internet downloads, churches, board of elections, department of motor vehicles. • Get out and vote!!

What qualities do I admire in a leader and does the candidate that I’m choosing fit that criteria? • Does the candidate that I’m selecting align with my own personals views? • Is my choice being affected by what others think (media, friends, family, etc.)?
