  1. WLCG Remarks Review of Computing Needs 6th July 2009

  2. Roadmap 2009/2010

  3. Resource concerns: • CNAF – not a big concern • ASGC – expect full resources available on schedule • NL-T1 – biggest concern – huge amount of resources to commission once new CC available Current Pledge status

  4. Status • 2009: • In most cases full 2009 pledges for CPU, Disk are already available; tape somewhat less (but OK as short lead-time for media) • Exceptions: NL-T1 significant and serious delays; ASGC delayed by fire but anticipate procurements; CNAF delayed 2009 but will have early 2010 • No point discussing 2009 any further – it is already done • 2010: • In many cases procurements are pending funding agency decisions / pending the outcome of this process today • Procurements are long processes – even if we agree today we must anticipate >>6 months to have resources usable • Some exceptions e.g. US where lead-times are less

  5. Total • Many problems to ramp up resources • Delays in procurements • Faulty equipment • Lack of power & planning ASGC NL-T1 NL-T1 CNAF BNL

  6. Key points • LHCC mini-review (Feb): • “Must ensure that computing is not a limiting factor when data comes” • We must plan the ramp-up of resources carefully – they now have to be commissioned during data taking • Have not had a good experience at this scale in last few years • Many comments made about the less than full utilisation of existing resources: • Remember: we always had the ramp up planned over several years – not feasible any other way • We knew that they would not be fully utilised before the LHC started • We now have significant experience with the computing models (CCRC’08, cosmics, STEP’09, simulation/production work) – today’s models take all that experience into account • Will not be able to estimate future needs any better than today until we have ~6 months real data experience • Effect of further schedule slip: • Minimal on 2010 resources unless many months slip – but we need to act now anyway based on today’s understanding of LHC schedule • Significant slippage could have implications for 2011 • Must conclude today! • Procurement lead times such that will not be able to provide additional resources in time (it’s already very late) • Clear message must be sent to RRB/funding agencies
