  1. CA BOCES Teaching is the CoreInformation Session September 2014 – June 2015

  2. Participating School Districts • Allegany-Limestone • Andover • Cuba-Rushford • Genesee Valley • Hinsdale • Olean • Pioneer • Portville • Randolph Academy • Salamanca • Scio • West Valley • Wellsville

  3. Goals of the Grant • To improve the quality of all educational assessments, while also… • Reducing the number of assessments that do not contribute to teaching and learning. CA BOCES and LCI will coach members in identifying high-quality assessments already in use for instructional or other curricular purposes that can simultaneously be used for APPR purposes, eliminating redundant or low-quality assessments, and developing new ones, if needed.

  4. Who’s Involved? • Learner Centered Initiatives, Ltd. • CA BOCES Professional Development Team • Existing Team (including embedded staff developers) • Grant/Assessment Coordinator (10-months) • Participating School Districts

  5. What’s the Plan? • Audit/Review assessments in the school district to determine quality, purpose, usefulness, redundancy, etc. of educational assessments. • Create an action plan to modify existing assessments, reduce existing assessments, create new assessments. • Implement the action plan through an assessment design institute. • Increase the assessment literacy across content areas.

  6. What’s the timeline? Sept Jan Apr Dec Jun Ongoing Support from CABOCES PD Student Work Content Days Content Teachers Audit/Review Audit Teams Assessment Design Design Teams

  7. From Audit/Review to Design Reduction Team Design Team 1 Audit/Review Team(s) Action Plan Design Team 2 Design Team 3

  8. Which tests will be audited? • Generally speaking, the following three types of tests will be audited: • Summative • Interim • Benchmark • Also, there is a focus in the grant on performance and portfolio assessment. This may influence the assessments you choose to modify or design in the design phase.

  9. What criteria are being used? • Purpose of the assessment • Skills, knowledge, behavior required by the standards • Comparability • Alignment • Rigor • Reliability • Ability to inform instruction and support learning • Use of diverse assessment technique

  10. Two Types of Teams Audit/Review Design • 5 – 7 people • Review tests for the district and create an action plan. • Wide range of stakeholders. • Most involvement in the fall. • 3-5 people • Design tests based on the action plan. • More specific range of stakeholders. • Most involvement in the winter and spring.

  11. Audit Review Team Team Composition Team Size • The team is comprised of staff who (5-7 people): • Represent all levels of the district. • Represent a district-wide perspective. • Include a school leader. • Are aware of the needs of different student populations. • The group size in manageable given: • The demands of the review. • The size of the district • Complexity of the assessment repertoire. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014

  12. Audit/Review Team Example • Team Composition: • The elementary principal, a middle school guidance counselor, a high school lead teacher, an ESL teacher, a district curriculum supervisor, the pupil personnel services director. • Team Size • The group is small enough to sit at one table, but not so small as to leave representative voices out. • Notes • It will make sense for some small-to-mid sized districts to have one audit/review team. • It will make sense for some mid-to-large sized districts to have more than one audit/review team. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014

  13. Audit Review Team Team Capacity • All members of the group understand: • The purpose of the grant. • Have protected the time and space to accomplish the work. • Understand how the work of the grant connects back to student learning. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014

  14. Audit Review Team Team Leadership Leadership Responsibilities • The contact person is interested in taking on the responsibilities associated with being the contact person. He or she has been, and feels empowered to make decisions about how the work is accomplished. • Understanding the demands and expectations of the grant. • Managing communication. • Ensuring follow through. • Facilitating technology supports (e.g., Google Docs, etc.) • Keeping and eye on the intended goal of the project. From Teaching is the Core Review Team Considerations, LCI 2014

  15. Questions so far? • What questions do you have regarding the information shared to this point?

  16. Assessment Audit/Review Dates • Additional Information • A good portion of audit work will need to take place back in the district and will vary from district to district. • Teams will need to include stakeholders (e.g., teachers, families, etc.) • LCI will provide phone/video conferencing support for one team from each district during this period. • CA BOCES will provide support for teams over and above the one team from each district.

  17. Design Team Dates • Additional Information • Design and field testing will need to take place back at the district. • LCI and CABOCES will provide ongoing support throughout this cycle.

  18. Content Specialist Dates • Additional Information • These teachers may or may not be on a design team. • Unique needs of assessments in these content areas. • Participants should not expect to develop an assessment here, but learn about best practices of assessment in their field.

  19. Budget • Contracting with LCI • On-site and off-site work • Assessment/Grant Coordinator • 10 months • Copies, materials • Contracting with Premier Banquet for Audit/Design dates • Approximately $500 per audit team (depends on the number of audit teams) • For teams to purchase curricular, professional development, or other materials to support the design of the assessment.

  20. Registering Audit Teams • Please utilize the audit team registration form. • Please return it to Laurie Sledge by September 19, 2014. • Please let us know if you have questions: • Grant information: Tim_Clarke@caboces.org • Registration: Laurie_Sledge@caboces.org
