  1. COUNTRY FOCUS ON UNITED KINGDOM What happens when the North Sea Reserves Run Out

  2. Study By UK Parliment

  3. Abstract The UK’s gas reserves are declining. government and industry analysts estimate that by around 2006 the UK will no longer be self-sufficient in gas production and will revert to being a net gas importer. Gas is the largest proportion of the UK’s primary energy supply, and gas-fired power plants are the main method of power generation. The UK will increasingly depend on gas imported from Europe and further afield. This POSTnote examines the UK’s options for dealing with a diminishing domestic gas supply and for ensuring future gas security. http://www.parliament.uk/documents/post/postpn230.pdf

  4. United Kingdom Outlook • Currently Heavily Dependant on North Sea Fields – mainly Natural Gas • Fields are aging • Electrical Generation has favored use of Natural Gas • Growth during the 1990s was directly related to cheap North Sea Oil, what happens now?

  5. RISING OIL PRICES AND THE CONSEQUENCES FOR A UK NATURAL GAS BASED ENERGY SUPPY STRATEGY • As the oil price rises natural gas prices will rise – the two are closely tied • Supply disruptions in Iraq, political in Russia or even by political design (Venezula?) could push oil and gas prices higher.

  6. RISING OIL PRICES AND THE CONSEQUENCES FOR A UK NATURAL GAS BASED ENERGY SUPPY STRATEGY • Rising oil and gas prices will affect the UK electricity sector acutely, • the chosen electricity generation plant is the gas based CCGT (Combined cycle gas turbine) which • this is very sensitive to gas price with the gas fuel cost for such a plant being 60% of the unit cost. (see recent RAE, Royal Academy of Engineering report)

  7. RISING OIL PRICES AND THE CONSEQUENCES FOR A UK NATURAL GAS BASED ENERGY SUPPY STRATEGY • This compares with other electricity generators such as nuclear plants which only have a fuel cost of 18% of the unit cost. • Thus UK energy strategy will be much more sensitive to oil/gas price • France/Japan not so dependent on oil or gas more Nukes • What’s the future?

  8. Published on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 by the Guardian/UK France Faces Nuclear Power Crisis; Ecologists Warn of Threat to River Life as Nuclear Stations Get Right to Discharge Warmer Waterby Amelia Gentleman in Paris Ecologists warned yesterday that the ecosystems in France's rivers were at grave risk after the government's decision to relax environmental regulations governing the operation of nuclear stations in an attempt to avert power cuts caused by the heatwave. www.commondreams.org/ headlines03/0813-05.htm

  9. Nukes aren’t Environmentally Nuetral /technology

  10. Recent News – Japan is nervous • An energy white paper, approved by the Japanese Cabinet in October 2011, says "public confidence in safety of nuclear power was greatly damaged" by the Fukushima disaster, and calls for a reduction in the nation’s reliance on nuclear power.
