Public Health Sanitation Division MISSION Develop, Administer, and Implement a statewide program designed & dedicated to the eradication, control and constant improvement of environmental & public health sanitation factors that may, through direct or indirect causes, adversely affect the health and well-being of our citizens, a community or state as a whole.

Public Health Sanitation Division TRAINING PROGRAM • Sanitarian’s Training Class • Required by Board of Registration for Sanitarians • 8 weeks classroom, 1 week field OJT - Food • Conducted annually, fall/winter • Charleston and Morgantown • Lecturers include Sanitarians, Engineers, Microbiologists, Epidemiologists, and other technical and administrative staff within OEHS, DHHR, and WVU

Public Health Sanitation Division TRAINING PROGRAM • Sanitarian’s Training Class Covers all aspects of public health sanitation: Public Health Laws, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Insect/Rodent Control, Sewage Disposal, Water Supplies, Food, Milk, Swimming Pools, Mobile Home Parks, Organized Camps, Child Care Centers, Institutions, Mass Gatherings, Disasters, Threat Preparedness

Public Health Sanitation Division FOOD PROGRAM Retail Food Establishments • Delegated to local health depts. • Inspections, Permits, Enforcement • Approximately 13,000 establishments Exception: • State Correctional and Health Care Facilities • Inspections, Permits, Enforcement by PHSD • 2 rules – Food and General Sanitation • >40 facilities - prisons, regional jails, juvenile detention centers, work release centers, health care facilities

  21. Institutions Institution – A public or private facility established by an organization or corporation for the purpose of providing higher education, care, training, rehabilitation or other similar services or functions.

Institutions • 64CSR18 – General Sanitation Rule • One year permit • State Institutions are granted an “indefinite” permit as there is no fee for the permit • Inspections • Physical facility = 1x/year • Food service = 2x/year • Risk based = 2-3x/year • An additional inspection form to be used • Complaints • As needed • Opening • Re-inspections
