Doctoral level the pivot between training and research
Doctoral level: The Pivot between Training and Research

  • International Partnerships at the Thesis level:

Cosupervised thesis or « cotutelle »  double diploma

  • Two supervisors, alternate stays in each country, flexible.

    One agreement per student.

  • Benefits: beyond one student!

     extended collaboration, joint publications

     further students

  • Funding: support for leaving expenses and travels

  • USA France: CHATEAUBRIAND – NSF

  • France USA: FULBRIGHT-France

Cotutelles france usa 2000 2011 80 signed agreements 36 us fr 44 fr us
Cotutelles France-USA 2000-201180 signed agreements (36 US  Fr, 44 Fr  US)

75% Sciences, Engineering, Health

2007 : PUF

2010 : more Chateaubriand Fellows in Science (6  24)

80 « cotutelles » PhD’s : American universities

Obstacles to double or joint phd degree
Obstacles to double or joint PhD Degree

  • American universities hesitate to “share” their degrees

  • Duration:

    - Graduate school 5 years (min.)

    - Master 2 years + Thèse 3 years (min.)

  • Problem of Tuition fees: home university?

  • Best: partnership Graduate School – ED

    cf Erasmus Mundus for Doctorates

    example: Bordeaux-UCF Orlando (1994) 10 cotutelles

    Better attractivity through international offer

Broader tools for partnerships
BROADER TOOLS FOR PARTNERSHIPS

Beyond individual Fellowships

  • Bilateral Funds:

    Berkeley (1993), MIT (2001), Chicago University (2001), Stanford (2003), Columbia (2007)

    Endowments MAEE/University

 Seed money for long term collaborations

    Average of 10 research projects/year/Fund

  • PUF***

  • International Laboratories (CNRS, INSERM, INRIA…)
