On the last days of the summer 2003 MuLan run, Steve and Peter investigated the performance of the piE3/MuLan beam for 34 MeV/c mu-. The separator was probably around 160 KV.

Our detectors were located immediately after the beam window of configuration 3.

Separator scan. ("muminus500b")

The S2 rate includes beam e and Michel e. The mS1 rate counts muons and Michel electrons. The small coinc rate mS1*S2 limits the Michel contribution to <5%. As a better estimate one could scale the S2 rate to the mS1 electron peak and subtract. The eS1 rate indicated some uncounted contribution of muon and electrons to mS1. The comparison S2 with mS1 suggests a ~10 % e contamination at separator B=700 DAC.

Conclusions

·30kHz mu- certainly possible. Focus ok, electrons ok. Momentum bin has to be reduced, needs simulation and experiment. Consistency with mu+ measurments?

·MORE mode: Problems rate: probable 200k achievable, with acceptable e contamination. If that can be achieved with 2 % momentum variance has to be studied. Finally, effect of kicker RF on sensitive chambers needs to be tested experimentally.
