LISTENING – PART 4 1 B Teacher: Tim, why did you choose to do your project on ‘how to lead a greener life’? Tim: Well, we’d done a lot about global warming and climate change in our science lessons. It was all a bit complicated really, but I knew something about the big issues. I found it all rather negative and depressing. So, I decided to think small, and see what I could do in my own life, rather than just act completely helpless. And I knew the rest of my family would be interested.
LISTENING – PART 4 2 C Teacher: Did you find it easy to get information? Tim: Yeah. I discovered there were lots of people of my age blogging about being green. There was stuff about transport and ways of getting to school each day. I'd always gone by car. Mum used to drop me off and then drive across town to work. Catching a bus would be better, from the environmental point of view, but we're not on a bus route, so I've gone for riding my bike to school now. Some of my friends live close to the school, so they can walk, but that's not possible for me.
LISTENING – PART 4 3 B Teacher: Ok, and what about being green once you’re actually at school? Tim: Well, I looked up how schools could make better use of resources like a paper. I realised that although all school paper was recycled, we used huge quantities, and I thought we should cut down. And then it came to me – it's obvious really – that we should be sending in most of our work electronically, you know, by email attachment. I'm going to recommend it to our school council – the people from each class who gives a headteacher suggestions from pupils. I read about something called GOOS paper too, that's paper that's still ‘good on one side’, and actually most of my friends do that already - use both sides I mean.
LISTENING – PART 4 4 A Teacher: And what about the school cafeteria? Tim: We could make that environmentally friendly as well. One school I’ve read about has ‘meatless Mondays’. Apparently, if we eat less meat, we use far less of the world's resources, and animals like cows and sheep pollute the atmosphere with methane gas! It's good to use local produce too, so we don't have to transport it far. That's something our school already does. But we still have machines with bottled milk, water and juice for sale, and I think we should just have jugs of water on the tables instead.
LISTENING – PART 4 5 B Teacher: Did you think about life at home too? Tim: Yeah, I think families are high energy consumers, especially now many homes are built with air conditioning. People of my age use a huge amount of power by leaving computer screens and game boxes running 24/7 - they’re never turned off! Now that's something we can all do something about! Fortunately, there are improvements like energy-efficient light bulbs though, which most people now have.
LISTENING – PART 4 6 A Teacher: And what about water? That’s a precious resource in every country in the world! Tim: Absolutely, so we should ask ourselves whether we really need a long hot bath when we get in from playing football! Wouldn’t taking a quick shower do? And hands up anyone who leaves the tap on when they brush their teeth. Do you need to do that? Of course you don't. And if you’re putting your sports clothes in the washing machine, use a cold setting if you can. Your parents will be happy because you'll use less electricity!
LISTENING – PART 4 7 C Teacher: Did you think about shopping? Tim: Yeah, families can do a lot to help the environment and reduce waste when they go to a food store. You don't need a new plastic bag every time you shop. You should take your own bags with you, and buy drinks in a glass bottle if you can, because glass is always recycled. It’s better to cut down on food which is packaged, and if you do continue to purchase ready prepared food rather than cooking with fresh ingredients, take the cardboard packets to the recycling bank, don't just chuck them in the dustbin!

Ex. 7 p. 24 BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT This is a classic in the Batman series. It is a dark, difficult at times rather disturbing film, which really makes you think. As you sit in the audience, you wonder what would happen if a hero like Batman really came along and decided to deal with organised crime in our big cities, yet you are also entertained because the film has a lot of amazing action scenes. In The Dark Knight, Batman is an action hero, but more importantly he is also a symbol of justice. He is a brave and determined character who teams up with the forces of law and order in the city of Gotham, ready to take on all the crime lords. As a result, he has to face the psychopathic and very scary villain called The Joker. In my opinion, this film is outstanding. It is not only thrilling but it also makes you feel as if you are experiencing what is going on. When I saw it, everyone in the audience was totally involved in it, so I'd say it’s a film you really must see.
