Supines. They just lie around in your sentences. What’s a supine?. It’s a verbal noun Note: it’s not an adjective (i.e. it’s not a participal) It just looks exactly like one  4 th Declension, neuter 2 forms ONLY = Accusative & Ablative. How do you make them?.

  2. What’s a supine? • It’s a verbal noun • Note: it’s not an adjective (i.e. it’s not a participal) • It just looks exactly like one  • 4th Declension, neuter • 2 forms ONLY = Accusative & Ablative

  3. How do you make them? • They use the participial stem • 4th principle part • Add “-um” for the Acc • Add “-ū” for the Abl.

  4. 2 Uses • The Ablative form is used with: Neuter adjectives • To do what? To indicate in what respect a particular quality is applicable • The Accusative form is used with: verbs of motion • To do what? to show purpose

  5. Exempla • facile factū easy to do • mīrābile dictū / mīrābile visū amazing to say (lit. amazing, in respect to saying) amazing to see • Calēdoniī sunt terribilēs vīsū audītūque. The Caledonians are frightening to see and hear.

  6. Plus exemplorum • ad cūriam ōrātiōnēs auditum contendō I hurry to the senate house to listen to speeches. • Agricola mīlitēs laudātum hortātumque per ōrdinēs prōcessit. Agricola proceeded through the rows to praise and encourage his soldiers. • piratae feminas raptum ad portum ibant. The pirates were going to the harbor to capture women.
