  1. Effects on Dissolved Oxygen during Generation at Center Hill Dam Jared Durrett Undergraduate Biology Department Tennessee Technological University Cookeville, TN 38505

  2. Introduction • TWRA (2003) tested for D.O. and its effect on aquatic species. • D.O. was not at the levels it needed to be regardless of methods that were in place.

  3. To determine the dissolved oxygen count of Center Hill Lake/ Caney Fork River before, during, and after generation That the dam will not have enough D.O. to support aquatic life. Objective and Hypothesis

  4. Methods and Materials • “Standard Methods” 4500-0 Dissolved Oxygen Content Method • Bench HI 2400D.O. Meter • Surveying potential sites for sampling to take place • A Dell Dimension 3000 to compile data using Excel

  5. Results • The D.O. below the dam was low, but as it flowed away became enriched with oxygen again.

  6. Discussion • Awareness • USACE • TVA • TWRA

  7. Summary • D.O. is important • Fish • Invertebrates • Botanicals • Algae • Etc. . .

  8. Summary • Measures have been in place to help: Not enough • Technological advances may be in order • Reconsider Dam construction

  9. Conclusion • Efforts must be made • Look at generation times (later Summer/early Fall) • Better Management of life • TVA/USACE Participation
