  1. STDs/STIs (same thing) Grab the STD facts sheet in the front of the room and a question card. Circle all of the time you see “pain” or “burning” in the “What to watch for” column

  2. Goals: • Identify 3 behaviors that can lead to STD infection. • Identify 3 symptoms of STD infection. • Compare and contrast Viral and Bacterial infections. • Standard: HE #6: STI and communicable disease protection.

  3. STI facts from the CDC STI means the same as STD Last year, 19 million people contracted a STI in America. http://www.cdc.gov/std/health-disparities/default.htm

  4. FAQs • Less than 50% of those infected have symptoms. • So all of the times you circled “Pain” or “burning” only half of the people who have the illness got pain or burning. • So SOMEONE CAN BE INFECTED AND NOT KNOW!

  5. Sex • Sex is defined as oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse. • Oral=Mouth to penis, mouth to vagina contact. • Anal= penis to anus (butt) contact • Vaginal= penis to vagina contact

  6. Mutual monogamy • BOTH partners agree only to have sex with each other • Least risk of contracting a STI.

  7. Serial Monogamy • Multiple mutually monogamous relationships that occur over time. • The more partners, the more risk of an STI.

  8. Promiscuity • Multiple sex partners • Either at once or over time • Math: There are 52 weekends in a year. • Someone has sex with a different person every weekend= ______ sex partners/year. • If they keep up the same pattern the next year = _______ sex partners/total. • Year 3 = ____/total Year 4= ____/total • How many partners do you want someone to have before they start dating you?

  9. Sexually Transmitted Infections Transmitted by: • skin to skin contact (touching) or • through sexual contact • Oral, anal, vaginal sex

  10. STIs • Bacterial or parasitic STIs = CURE. • Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Crabs, Syphilis, Scabies

  11. STIs • Viral STIs = NO CURE. • They will stay in the body forever. • HIV, Herpes, HPV, Hepatitis.

  12. Most common STIs in America • HPV (V) • Chlamydia (B) • Gonorrhea (B) • Hepatitis B (V) • Herpes (V) • Syphillis (B) • HIV (V) Which STIs can be cured? V=Viral, B=Bacterial

  13. What is a simple way to remember which of the most common STIs are viral? • They all start with H • Hepatitis, HIV, Herpes, Human Papilloma Virus

  14. Pics of Diseased, uh, parts. • Why do you have to see it? • These are consequences of an adult decision to have sex. • If you don’t want to deal with these consequences, abstinence (not having sex) is always a good idea.

  15. Pics: Why? • If YOU do not respect yourself to protect yourself from STIs, nobody else will. • Remember, nothing says, “I Love You,” like getting an STI test done by a doctor.

  16. Rules for the Pictures • Keep your groaning to yourself (suck it in as a whisper). • No yelling out things like, “Oh my gosh, I’d rather cut my parts off!” and the like. • This might be the first time you’ve ever seen the parts of the other gender, sorry about that.

  17. Crabs (Pubic Lice) • Transmitted by sexual contact AND/OR touching. • This is the only STI that can be transmitted from a toilet seat. • Also transmitted by infected towels, bedding, and furniture if someone was infected used them before you did.

  18. Crabs

  19. Scabies • Usually transmitted by sexual activity, but can be transmitted by touching. • It is common for children to be infected with scabies, they weren’t having sex, again, transmitted by touching.

  20. Scabies

  21. Scabies

  22. Transmitted only through oral, anal, and vaginal sex. Is this a viral or bacterial infection? Bacterial (doesn’t start with H.) Is there a cure? Yes. Gonorrhea

  23. Gonorrhea

  24. Chlamydia • Transmitted only through oral, anal, and vaginal sex. • Easily spread even though someone doesn’t have symptoms. • Is this viral or bacterial? • So is there a cure or no cure?

  25. Chlamydia

  26. Syphilis • On the rise across America. • Is this viral or bacterial? • Curable in the first 2 stages. • After stage 2, the bacteria goes to the brain and causes blindness, insanity, and then death.

  27. Syphilis (Stage 1)

  28. Syphilis (Stage 2)

  29. Herpes 1 (Oral Herpes) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • People like to think of it as the “nice Herpes” but it can still travel to the genitals and do not nice things. • It’s a cold sore (a blister that usually appears on the lip or site of infection around the face. • It is estimated that 8 out of 10 adults have oral Herpes.

  30. Herpes 1

  31. Herpes 2 (Genital Herpes) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • It’s estimated that 1 in 4 adults have Genital Herpes. • Many have never had symptoms and don’t even know they have it (even though they might be able to pass it on to others).

  32. Herpes 2

  33. Human Papilloma Virus (Genital Warts) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • Can be transmitted even if warts are not visible. • This is the most common STI in America.

  34. Genital Warts

  35. Genital Warts

  36. HIV/AIDS • HIV is the infection that causes AIDS. • HIV has few or no symptoms for to 10 years before symptoms of AIDS develop. • Can be spread during sex, exposure to infected blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk.

  37. AIDS-associated Kaposi sarcoma • Skin sores that indicate that someone’s immune system is failing due to AIDS. • The sores become cancerous and can lead to the death of someone with an impaired immune system.

  38. HIV/AIDS

  39. Bacterial STIs Vs. Viral STIs
