Overview of CCAS • CCAS is involved in students’ academic lives from Orientation through post-college programs • Activities of particular interest to freshmen • Program Planning: Rochester Curriculum, pre-health requirements • Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate credit • Transfer credit • Tutoring program • Referrals • Academic records

Advising • Pre-Major Advisers • Advisers help students with their academic decisions and refer to other individuals and offices when needed • Freshmen are assigned by the Dean of Freshmen and assignments made primarily on where students live • Students begin consulting with their pre-major advisers in late summer • Consultation with pre-major adviser continues through the sophomore year or until the student declares their major(s) • Typical caseload per Adviser is 10 freshmen & 10 sophomores

  5. Advising • Professional Advisers • All undergraduate students are welcome to use the advisers available in CCAS • Meet the advisers http://www.rochester.edu/College/CCAS/advisers.html • Major Advisers • Students are assigned to an adviser in their department once they declare their major

  6. How do I access professional advisers in CCAS? • Academic Services Counter • Walk-in advising (Monday through Friday, 1-4pm) • Appointments (Usually 30 minutes) • E-mail advising (cascas@rochester.edu)

The Rochester Curriculum Students must fulfill a major and two clusters at minimum to satisfy each of the three divisions**: • Humanities • Social Sciences • Natural Sciences and Engineering http://www.rochester.edu/College/CCAS/index.html • Majors • Minors • Clusters • Primary Writing Requirement **Most engineers need to complete a cluster in either the Humanities or Social Sciences

Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences Advising • Engineering & Applied Sciences faculty advisers stay with their advisees for all four years • Engineering majors are not declared until the end of the sophomore year • There are two engineering & computer science advisers in CCAS • Hajim School Departments (BME, CHE, CSC, ECE, ME, OPT) • “Intro to Engineering” courses offered in all departments • Many study abroad programs are available

Special Academic Programs Fifth Year Enrichment Programs: • The Take Five Scholars Program and Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) offer students the opportunity to enrich their undergraduate experience with a tuition-free fifth year • There are about 60 students currently in their fifth year • Students can apply in both the fall and spring semesters Independent Study and Internships: • More than 1,000 UR students are participating in internships and independent study experiences during the 2012-13 academic year

Health Professions Advising • CCAS has 4 advisors for students interested in health professions graduate programs (e.g., medical school, dental school, veterinary school, nursing) • HP Advising offers academic and career planning seminars and individual advising for students as well as support in the graduate application process • 37% of Rochester graduates pursue careers in healthcare, public health and life sciences research • Health professions website: • http://www.rochester.edu/college/ccas/health/ • Requirements: • http://www.rochester.edu/College/CCAS/AdviserHandbook/PremedPic.html
