  1. Liquid scintillation radiometry for the determination of radionuclidic purity of 90Y from radiochemical 90Y/90Sr generator Petr Vaňura1, Věra Jedináková-Křížová1, Miloslav Vobecký2 1 Institute of Chemical Technology, Department of Analytical Chemistry, Prague 6, Czech Republic 2 Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Science, Prague 4, Czech Republic

  2. New extraction method, where mother radioisotope 90Sr is present in the organic phase (0.03 mol/L heptachlorodicarbollylcobaltate and 0.015 mol/L benzo-15-crown-5) has been developed. The daughter 90Y is reextracted into 0.2M HCl.

  3. The direct determination of 90Sr in great access of 90Y by the measurement of beta activity is impossible, so the separation of 90Sr is necessary. • Separation: Extraction of 90Sr by the nitrobenzene solution of Na - form dicarbollylcobaltate in the presence of PEG 400 from the aqueous solution of EDTA with pH=5.

  4. 3 2 1 log D 0 -1 -2 -3 2 4 6 8 10 pH The dependence of distribution ratio of strontium on pH in the aqueous - (Na,H)4EDTA - PEG 400 - bis-1,2-dicarbollylcobaltate - nitrobenzene extraction system

  5. Direct measurement of 90Sr radioactivity in the organic phase by liquid scintillation is impossible because of the presence of nitrobenzene caused quenching of scintillation • The reextraction of 90Sr into aqueous solution is necessary. • The reextraction can be done by 0.1M solution of Ba(NO3)2. • Determination of sufficiency of 90Sr/90Y separation can be done by the measurement of beta spectra of the reextract. • Beta spectra measurement: the TriathlerTM LSC and Ultima Gold XR cocktail.

  9. The radioactivity of 90Sr is measured using the window 50-150 channel • The radioactivity of 90Y impurity is measured using the window 300-500 channel

  10. Conclusion • 1) The method for the separation of 90Sr from the solution with great access of 90Y has been developed. • 2) It has been proved that this method can be used for the determination of traces of 90Sr in the 90Y product obtained from 90Y/90Sr extraction generator. • 3) The Sr/Y separation factor is more than 105 in one extraction step. • 4) The detection limit for 90Sr is about 1 Bq.
